WASHINGTON — The compelling family story of exile from Fidel Castro's Cuba often told by rising Republican star Marco Rubio is an embellished version of the truth, The Washington Post reported Thursday.

Citing naturalization documents and other official records, the Post said Rubio's parents had in fact immigrated to the United States and been admitted for permanent residence here more than two-and-a-half years before Castro took power in 1959. snip

The rhetorically-gifted 40-year-old, who burst on to the national political scene in 2009 as a favorite of conservative Tea Party voters by advocating small government and limited taxes, has placed the alleged flight of his parents from Castro's communist Cuba at the center of his strategy.

He mentions it in the second paragraph of his official biography on his website, saying Mario and Oriales Rubio "came to America following Fidel Castro's takeover."
