Patriotic Great-Grandma Volunteers For Iraq Duty

<LAWTON, Okla. -- A 72-year-old great-grandmother from Oklahoma is preparing for deployment to the war zone in Iraq.

Lena Haddix will be a civilian employee of the Department of Defense and volunteered for the duty. She said she wanted to do something for her country.

Haddix was a military wife and has worked at the Fort Sill PX since 1977. She's expected to have a similar job in Iraq, working 10 hours a day.

Her preparation for deployment is similar to a soldier's, including shots and a medical checkup to make sure she's physically able to do a tour of at least six months.

Haddix will go to Fort Bliss, Texas, for a week of training, then to Germany where she'll get her assignment. >

Some of the researchers on here are awesome, but I always feel STOOOOPID!! If I don't already have a saved link for something, I don't know how to research it in depth. I know how to type stuff in google, but I don't get the juicy stuff that people get on some of their research!!

now that this story is out. "Regular" people are often not searchable on the internet if they don't have a phone listed in their name.

She's 72 years old and probably doesn't have a computer or done anything until now to get her name out there. If I Google my name, I get plenty of hits who aren't me. Before I had an article published by Common Dreams and started writing for one of the presidential campaign websites for our state, you wouldn't have been able to find the actual me out there either because I wasn't traceable that way.

The people running AFEES made a HUGE mistake here. While some people might think this is patriotic, it reeks of the old men and boy soldiers during the last gasps of Hitler.

Regardless of whether or not she "volunteered" it gives the appearance that we are sending geezers over to a war zone. The temperatures can get up well above a hundred, the sand fleas are a total bitch, and even in a controlled environment, one RPG and you can kiss that air conditioning (if you are lucky to have it) good bye.
