White House Asks for Study on CIA Forces

By KATHERINE PFLEGER SHRADER, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - The White House has requested that the Central Intelligence Agency (news - web sites) and the Pentagon (news - web sites) study whether the Defense Department should take over CIA (news - web sites) paramilitary operations, as recommended by the Sept. 11 commission.

Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld and then-acting CIA Director John McLaughlin rejected the idea — McLaughlin quite viscerally — when the commission issued its final report this summer. Bush's request indicates that the administration wants to give the issue closer study
skipp...

Some nibbling away at the CIA's domain is already under way. Recent legislation would give the U.S. Special Operations Command up to $25 million to support "foreign forces, irregular forces, groups or individuals" that help U.S. efforts against terrorists and other enemies. Such aid — which could mean cash, weapons or other assistance to often shadowy groups or figures — has traditionally been handled by the CIA.

The war still rage !!!

2. Can't these people write?!

Visceral means intuitive. I think the writer meant vociferously. Can't believe that the copy editor didn't catch that.

carry on...

3. Maybe the demise of the CIA as we know it is a good thing.
not that I think the centralization of puwer under 1 Chimp is.
As I understand it, the CIA is intended to provide protection from future Pearl Harbors, at as far as its 1947 Charter went.

I don't have a whole lot of reasons to support its paramilitary operations or see much value in the things we know its done over the years and now that its been partially blamed for the Reichstag fire of 2001, its been discredited further as a fall - guy agency. I am just not sure this is a bad thing.

What does worry me is its use in domestic law enforcement under the Chimperor regime.
