Saddam will go on trial by year-end: Iraqi minister
DUBAI (AFP) - Toppled Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein (news - web sites) will go on trial on charges of crimes against humanity by the end of the year, the country's Defence Minister Hazem Shaalan revealed.

"He will be tried before the end of the year," Shaalan told the London-based Arabic newspaper Asharq Al-Awsat on Tuesday.

Pressed on whether Saddam's trial would open before Iraqi elections scheduled for January 30, the minister said: "Yes, before the elections."

A US official in Baghdad said in September that Saddam, who is currently in US custody in Iraq (news - web sites), is unlikely to go on trial before the end of the year.

1. he won`t go on trial for a long time
since the Iraqi judicial system has to be rebuilt, judges have to be trained, evidence against Saddam has to be found, and last but not least, the united nations will not sanction the trial nor help in training judges because of the USA insistence on the death penalty. the usa will not put saddam on trial-dead men tell no tales

6. Aren't they missing alot of hard evidence because Rummy allowed looting?
I'd like to see the trial on TeeVee. I think it would be funny as all get out.
