Anti-Bush activists vow massive turnout

CBC
Nov 23 2004

OTTAWA - Organizers say they're expecting a huge turnout of protesters during the visit to Ottawa by U.S. President George W. Bush next week.

The "No to Bush" committee also says it's decided not to co-operate with the Major Events Liaison Team (MELT), made up of officers from several police forces.

An organizer with the committee, Dan Sawyer, says the executive committee voted not to co-operate with police, as they have done in some previous protests, because they felt they had been manipulated by the MELT unit.

...

Precise security arrangements have not yet been announced. But they can be expected to be restrictive. President Bush has been a lightning rod for protest almost every time he's ventured outside the United States. Just last week, in Chile, President Bush's visit to the APEC summit led to riots broken up with water cannon and tear gas.

C'mon over George, we're ready for you!

...

As George W. Bush is set to visit here next week, his northern neighbour and a country he has yet to visit since taking over the Presidency four years ago, it will test the civility of a country that takes great pains to present itself as the enlightened middle power of the modern world. Canadians have readily lapped up the mythology that they are the modern day poster children of human rights, peacekeeping and universal medicare.

If Canadians were Americans, they would be the “democratic wing” of the Democratic Party.

Bush had testy relations with the previous Chrétien administration and even with the present government where many high ranking insiders clearly favoured Al Gore in 2000 and John Kerry in 2004, having much to do with directions in American foreign policy.

Damnit! I think they should too... but as long as he is president, then he has diplomatic immunity.
Damnit, damnit, damnit!
They should do it anyway!

There is a new Real Estate form that is the direct result of the Patriot Act that asks the buyer if he is a terrorist or associates with terrorists. Your tax dollars at work, folks.

Germany in particular? The last Bush protest I had attended was half a million strong, even by the German media's admission.

33. MY POINT EXACTLY!!
When are WE, the oppressed and down-trodden going to get our act together and PROTEST!!

Time is ticking away... we need to do something BIG & SOON!!!

This has been my mantra since the election. Let's UNITE and MARCH! Look at how fast they got their act together in Ukraine!! Now Canada! What are we?? WIMPS!

This MUST be done BEFORE the Inauguration, I don't want to be rubbing elbows with the REPUKES!!! I live in Florida but will bear the cold of D.C. and bring others with me.

I'm sure we'll have to find coverage of it on the internet, because it certainly won't be on the cable or evening newscasts.
It would be nice if someone could go and post pictures for us on DU.

30. although I love Canada and would live there if I could
It's pathetic that we have to rely upon Canada, or any other country to protest this jerk we are so embarrassed to have as our president.

We need to be encouraging our own. Instead we have come to rely upon other countries to satisfy some sort of protest by default.

All the more to love Canada for. All the less to love my own country for.
