Meteorite 'photographed' hitting Earth
Edited on Wed Nov-24-04 05:58 PM by seriousstan
NORTHERN Territory scientists were last night studying what could be the first photograph of a meteorite hitting Earth.

The chances of an impact being captured on film are millions to one.

"If this is true, it's one of the most remarkable pictures ever taken," astronomy tutor Geoff Carr said yesterday.

The photograph was taken by keen amateur photographer Wayne Pryde as he stood near the Darwin Cenotaph on The Esplanade and looked down to Fort Hill Wharf on Monday evening.

5. The chances of an impact being captured on film are millions to one
And the chances of Bush beating the exit polls in Ohio and Flordia are 250 million to 1. Kind of makes you think.

7. It would be a bit more impressive
if instead of having that dotted line, they enhanced the photograph to show the meteor's trail.

9. I don't buy it
He didn't know he's taken the picture till he saw the picture later?

Yeah right. Looks like static, or heck, just about anything could have caused that little blip.

11. I witnessed a near collision
I was golfing in Boise, Idaho ~33 years ago, when a brilliant blue object appeared in the sky above and moved eastward. The bolide passed behind "Deer Point", re-appeared, then passed behind "Shaffer Butte" (the two mountaintops that define "Bogus Basin", the local ski area.)

The event was reported in 'Astronomy Magazine' with the headline: "Cosmic Boulder Skims Rockies". According to the experts, the meteorite skimmed Earth's atmosphere and had sufficient velocity remaining to escape Earth's gravitational pull.

That freaked me out as a kid.

Even more than tornadoes.

And tornadoes REALLY freaked me out.
