U.S. Troops Wounded in Iraq Tops 10,000
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20050104/ap_on_re_mi_ea/iraq_us_wounded&cid=540&ncid=1480

WASHINGTON - The number of U.S. troops wounded in Iraq (news - web sites) since the start of the war in March 2003 has surpassed 10,000, the Pentagon (news - web sites) said Tuesday in a delayed update of its casualty data.

Of the 10,252 total wounded, the Pentagon said 5,396 were unable to return to duty and 4,856 sustained injuries that were light enough to allow them to resume their duties. The total is normally reported each week, but the Pentagon had not updated the figures since Dec. 22, when the number of wounded stood at 9,981.

The number of U.S. military deaths in Iraq stood at 1,335 on Tuesday, according to the Pentagon.

... It is actually 1340 dead as of Tuesday.

2. Betcha these #'s are low balled.
Betcha it's way over 30,000 not even inclusive of PTSD. This will haunt us all for ages. So tragic and completely unnecessary.

12. It was 21000 a year ago - but then we redefined combat wounded!
I doubt the media has the ethics to remind anyone about the re-definition and the actual total number of medical evac flights to date,

17. They no longer count the ones
who get injured in non-combat events. I read about a guy who lost 3 limbs when a tire he was changing exploded. He won't be listed in those numbers.

4. which has cost more lives.....
the recent tsunami disaster or the US invasion of Iraq?

And why do the cable channels run constant footage of the destruction and dead bodies from the tsunami, but we never see the destruction and dead bodies from Iraq?

I think the lives on more innocent people have been destroyed by the US invasion of Iraq than by the natural disaster.

that does not give a shit about anything that happens outside of this country. We have seen Iraq shocked and awed and we saw an injured Iraqi shot dead on tv last month and nary a wimper. Scott Peterson and any other amerikan distraction means so much more.

7. it is possible you are right, but i think it is more the short TIME SPAN
needed to kill so many people that has this on the tip of peoples tongues...

that and the fact that the MSM "news" refuse to show images of the slaughtered innocent Iraqi's, and the military says ALL the dead are insurgents... (i have my doubts about slaughtered infants and tiddlers being big in the insurgency, but hey - what do i know?)
:eyes:
it is worth mentioning to any rightwing types who bemoan this tragic tsunami that we have killed that many Iraqi's and then some...

:grr:

9. This Iraq debacle is disgustingly surreal
Such a massive cost and for WHAT? There should be widespread outrage and 24 hour news coverage of this ongoing scandal. The criminals in charge are using the blind pride Americans have in their country to play them like a fiddle and the media is their accomplice.

11. Of course, that's why they're called "Swift Boat Veterans for TRUTH"
O'Neil and the rest of the Nazi Youth will certainly spring forward to quickly insure proper medal awarding.

They are just so f*cking interested in truth, you know.

13. The Bush admin turned young Americans into our financial burdens
They could have a productive life and become healthy taxpayers if there wasn't a Bush war.

Now we have to take care of them for LIFE!!!!

Stooopid war!

14. Don't you know? We have all the money, people and time in the world
to devote to "letting freedom reign" in Iraq, regardless of what the Iraqis want. How much longer are the freepers going to buy into this ass kicking before they give up?

16. This could be much worse
Imagine if our people were there with Vietnam-era weapons and equipment. For all the talk of a lack of body armor, most soldiers have at least some. Imagine if they didn't have anything. Many of these wounded would be dead. We're seeing horribly wounded people coming back for very long rehab stays at Walter Reed and Bethesda.

Where would public sentiment be if these more or less anonymous wounded were, in fact, deaths? Imagine if, instead of 1300+ killed we had 10,000+ killed. Would the country still be as rah-rah for this war or would they be in the streets with pitchforks and torches calling for the head of the Great Chimpus Khan?

Fuck you, George Bush. Thanks for this pointless war. Thanks for sending our sons to their maiming and deaths.

George Bush, I hope you rot in the worst hell your simple little mind can imagine ........ you motherfucker.

with being able to stop soldiers from bleeding out thanks to new wound dressing technology, rather then new body-armor and weapons. But your sentiment is right on.
