Fidelity will halt AIDS, says Pope

The Weekend Australian
January 24, 2005

THE Pope stressed yesterday that the Catholic Church believed abstinence and fidelity within marriage, rather than condoms, were the best way to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS.

The Pope's words, addressed to a new ambassador to the Vatican, took on an added significance because it was his first direct comment on the controversial topic since a Catholic official in Spain last week appeared to question the Church's stand against condoms.

"The Holy See ... believes prevention through education about the sacredness of life and the correct practice of sexuality - that is, chastity and faithfulness - is necessary above all other things in order to prevent this disease responsibly," the 84-year old pontiff said in his written address.

2. The Vatican is always
my first choice for any medical advice. They are always on the cutting edge of medical science. I wish they had an HMO I could join.

3. Lol
That should just about do it.. in an alternate universe where the utopian planet earth exists.

And.. errr.. shouldn't the clergy start practicing what they preach first?

4. He's right. But what's the chances of getting a majority to practice it vs
the chances of getting people to use condoms. That's my problem with all this abstinence stuff. I mean in theory it's near 100% effective, but honestly if you had a campaign to encourage abstinance and fidelity versus a campaign to promote condom use in practice the condom use will be more effective at preventing it because it's super hard to curb biological drives.

7. Yeah, and going back to horses will halt automobile crashes
and eating raw food will eliminate kitchen fires and death will cure illness.

Funny how a celibate old fart knows SO much about human sexuality.
