Christopher Reeve's widow to attend State of the Union
WASHINGTON Christopher Reeve's widow, Dana Reeve, says she'll be present when President Bush gives his State of the Union address tomorrow night.

Reeve says she hopes to hear the president propose additional support for medical research. After Bush took office, he restricted federal funding for hotly debated stem-cell research to the use of stem cell lines that existed before August 2001.

Reeve has been a vocal advocate of embryonic stem cell research.

4. Well, that's a waste of an evening. He specifically limited research to X
number of lines and then, somehow, mysteriously they ALL become contaminated. End of stem cell research.

Wonder if he used the same thugs who pulled off the anthrax murders?

14. No mystery...
The stem cell lines were the product of the initial forays into the field. They were essentially "prototypes", and never meant for use on patients.

5. Good for her. She'll garner publicity for the research. Hope it's also
a good thing for her personally. Her loss is still fresh, I assume, and she knows she will get press attention. I admire her choice.

7. Hmm...
Funny thing: Bush has until now supported those limited stem cell lines, but simutaneously he has his ambassador in the UN, along with Costa Rica, advocating a ban on all forms of cloning, including medicinal and therapeutic cloning. If that ban was to pass, the stem cell lines he has superficially supported will become a violation of UN protocol. So the question I ask is if Reeve has any other expectation?

9. Poor thing.
I hope she doesn't come into this with high hopes.

However, I hope she's happy by tomorrow night. I'd be ecstatic if that happened. Unfortunately, it won't.

13. A setup? RW spun Korean neuro success into a RW success.
I recall Koreans using stem cells gained marginal success at reconnecting brain-motor function. It appeared to slam at Bush's stem cell idiocy. The press did not report it widely.

Later, the same news story came again framed differently making Bush's denial of stem cells sound good.

Anyone recall the details of the second story?

15. Before he left, Christopher gave Dana all the information
...she needed to supercede him as a new superpower. While Chris has returned to Krypton, Dana has made use of the Fortress of Solitude.

Once inside for the SOTU address, Dana will use her new superpowers to render the administration helpless.
