Bush to Seek Broad Slowdown in Government Spending Growth

By Adam Entous and Caren Bohan

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Bush (news - web sites) on Monday will propose a $2.5 trillion budget that cuts scores of domestic programs, from housing to environmental protection, in a bid to show he is serious about reining in deficits that have ballooned under his watch.

Bush's fiscal 2006 budget also begins to slow the rapid growth of homeland security and defense spending, albeit only slightly, after a post-Sept. 11, 2001, surge.

More than 150 federal programs are slated to be slashed or eliminated, including subsidies for the Amtrak intercity rail system. "This is the tightest budget that has been submitted since we got here," Vice President Dick Cheney (news - web sites) said on Fox News Sunday.

Bush's budget will call for reducing growth of overall discretionary spending to below 2.3 percent -- the projected rate of inflation -- from 3.9 percent this year.

(snip)

But critics say Bush's budget will mask the true fiscal picture because it leaves out the future costs of military operations in Iraq (news - web sites) and Afghanistan (news - web sites), as well the borrowing required under his plan to add private retirement accounts to Social Security (news - web sites).

1. I propose that bush is slow
What an idiot .... He wants to kill America ..... nothing more nothing less .....
take away money from the old .... give it to rich investment cronies .... take money
from cops, schools, the environment, health, research, roads, farms, and give that
to halliburton and so on.

All the while playing Billy Bad Ass w/ the rest of the world. When he had a chance to
go and fight he chickened out. But now he is more than tough enough for anybody.

But in other area Bill Gates, China, and all kind of others are seeing what will happen
to the U.S. dollar and are running from it.

God I hate that unelected mother fucker.

:grr:

3. However, tax cuts for the wealthiest will become permanant.
Can anyone find any cuts in any element of Bush's corporate welfare?

6. Umm, let me see...cut domestic spending except for
anything connected to the military industrial complex. Middle America is going to get the shaft again. But they will support this douche bag administration while they get screwed.

American stupidity is stunning.

8. Deja vu all over again.
I just finished reading David Stockman's book, The Triumph of Politics. He was the architect of Reagan's supply-side economics. He described his vision as a genuine attempt to shrink government. The tax reductions would be offset with cuts across the board--military, social security/medicare, and all other social programs. Only problem was, the politicians loved the tax cut idea, but not cutting military or social security. They made excruciating cuts in all the social programs, but Stockman knew it would never be enough to pay for all the tax cuts they had made. He tried to get Reagan to back off on some of the tax cuts, but he wouldn't budge on that or the military. Stockman finally resigned in disgrace and frustration, and our country got record deficits.

I thought it was interesting that he was very careful not to say anything negative about Reagan, but the depiction still came through as someone not very aware of what was going on. He mentioned that Reagan would perk up whenever he heard someone mention "welfare" or "cutting costs" and tell a few anecdotes about what he had done in California. Reagan's cabinet was really running the country, in between pulling all sorts of power plays on each other.
