Protestor Tears Down Homeowners' New Anti-War Effigy

An anti-war effigy that has provoked a national discussion on the First Amendment has again been torn from a home in Sacramento's Land Park area.

Early Monday afternoon, News10 witnessed a young man tearing down the new version of the effigy, which the homeowners replaced on Saturday.

The effigy depicted a soldier's uniform in desert camouflage with a placard reading "Bush Lied, I Died" hanging around the neck. The effigy hung below the home's pitched roofline.

On Monday, a young man who identified himself only as "Mike" drove up to the house on Marty Way in a white pick-up truck. He climbed a tree to the roof, leaned over, pulled the effigy from the wall, and tossed it to the ground. He then grabbed the uniform and tossed it in his pick-up before driving off.

27. One post I read on another website said the cops are...
pursuing it now. When it was one incident, they weren't going to make a big deal about it. The neighborhood is polarized and I think the cops stepping in could have backfired. Now it's obviously needed.

I hope everyone keeps their heads on this. Especially the DEMS so the point will be the point and not our over reaction.

Bush Cheney bumperstickers on his Toyota truck, plus a POW-MIA ribbon and a red, white and blue "Support our Troops" ribbon. So what exactly does this fucking brainless guy named "Mike" think freedom is?

17. Wait a minute. Where are all the DU "Progressives" who spent the last two
two days screaming bloody murder because some protestors entered into the petrol exchange?

It appears to these "Progressives," criminal activity is okay -- so long as it is directed against (real) Progressives.

26. I wouldn't support
a scenario where someone tore down an effigy of a hanged 'liberal' or something otherwise offensive on a RWingers home either.

A banner hung by Greenpeace on a smokestack recently got some activists jail time, but I still applaud such actions.

But you see, the protesters at the petrol exchange simply put up signs, adding to the decor. This little rethug tore down property.;-)

Hypocritical? Maybe. But the fact is, the protestors were going for a public display. This little coward just can't stand free speech. That's how my liberal mind sees it.

18. Put up a sign saying trespassers and vandals will be shot...
And shoot the fuckers when they break the laws. Tresspassing=1. Vandalism=2. Wilfull destruction of property=3. Premeditated destruction=4? Graffiti=5 (the poster left on their home by the sack'o'shit.)

In the name of self-defense. They have a right to protect their plot of land from invaders.

25. Neighbors are offended...
Don't be appalled, ladies, think about this.

The people making the point want your son/brother to come home alive. I know it hurts, but if people like this don't stand up to the insanity, your boys will come home in boxes and it will all be hush hush. Besides, it's an effigy of someone who HAS died and so it isn't your son/brother.... Yet.

http://www.news10.net/storyfull1.asp?id=9313
<snip>
Some neighbors are offended. "Whatever she wants to say and that's fine, but don't use my son to make your statement. That's a representation of my son!" exclaimed Devina Weaver, whose son is currently serving in Iraq.

Jennifer Bruns is also appalled at the Pearcys. Her brother is also serving in Iraq. "It hurts me because I think he's in danger everyday," she said. "Why do I want to see someone who I love very much, who wears that uniform, everyday hanging in front a house?"

however, I don't think it is nearly as upsetting as having an illegal war shoved on the world resulting in thousands upon thousands of deaths.

30. Ms Burns, we all hope your brother gets home safe & sound.
And that is the point. If it hurts you to be reminded of the real nature of war in general and THIS war in particular, good. Not thinking about the lies and the war will not keep your brother safe. Going about life as usual is not supporting the troops.

Now, please join us to stop the junta from killing/maiming/poisoning more people with their lies. Putting our heads in the sand or going shopping will not help your brother. Facing reality will.

31. There was a new one up on the house more recently.
Edited on Mon Feb-21-05 08:12 PM by fleabert
I can't find a pic of it yet, but I saw on the local news that they put put up a sign that was of a cutout in the shape of the US, painted with the US flag on it, in a toilet. Next to that was 'T'anks to Bush'

Not much on the news about any aftermath to this one.

I applaud them, not to be intimidated about putting up new stuff every time something gets pulled down by area fools. I remember hearing that they have been doing it for years, only getting real press now.

edited to add: haven't found any new info yet, but did find this about a recent protest that included both sides of the issue:

http://www.sacunion.com/pages/sacramento/print/2542/

(there are some good pictures of the protest at the end)

>snip<
Across the street, Dan Buckley, a Colfax resident who served three years in the Vietnam War and is a member of Veterans for Peace, said he and his fellow anti-war protestors do support the troops and want them home.

“We don’t want the people in the world to know that these are the only types of people that can get together and protest. We are here for Freedom of Speech and we are also here to protest the war,” Buckley said. “That was the message on these people’s house and I support it and I support how they portrayed it.”

"They hate us for our freedom". They hate us because we can speak out against our government. Well, maybe they will start liking us more now that we're losing our freedom. Another brillant strategy from George W. Bush, the Idiot King.

I especially like how he says protests like this should be taken to another country...like Iraq...who we freed. According to Mike, the Iraqis are now freer than us...freedom of expression has gotten Mike's blessing there, but not in Sacramento.
