Crime rises beneath New York
Times
By James Doran
Commuters in fear after murders on subway train system

A SPATE of gruesome subway murders is terrifying New York’s commuters amid growing fears that the city’s underground is once again becoming a subterranean hotbed of crime.

Earlier this month a train running from Ozone Park to Harlem stopped in the tunnel as it nosed out of Nostrand Avenue station in Brooklyn. The driver could see what appeared to be a partially buried human body on the tracks in front of him. He was wrong. The two legs and a single arm he could see above the sleepers had been hacked from a man’s body and dumped a few yards down the line from the platform.

A dismembered, headless torso, to which the limbs were thought to belong, was found days later at a recycling plant miles away. Last Saturday morning, meanwhile, German Cabrera, 26, was shot in the chest and killed after an argument with an unidentified man on the platform at the 18th Street station in Chelsea, Manhattan.

Two police officers who raced to the scene were unable to save Mr Cabrera because they did not have a subway ticket with which to open the electronic turnstile on to the platform. The service gate could not be opened to let paramedics in because the station’s ticket booth was closed for the weekend with no staff on duty.

4. just a matter or time
I was going to say "unbelievable" but thats the wrong sentiment as it is totally believable. For the last two years we have had constant warnings that events like this would happen with the loss of token booth operators. The MTA has had deaf ears. The amount of money they will be saving by closing the booths is completely insignificant when compared to their operating budget. I hope this man's family sues the MTA into some common sense. Maybe a 10mm lawsuit is just what the MTA needs to get over its institutional obstinance on this issue.

2. Take a look at "Mole People..."
"The Mole People: Life in the Tunnels Beneath New York City" by Jennifer Toth.

She describes the societies that exist in the tunnels beneath New York City. I read the book a couple of years ago and found it fascinating. I only wish she had devoted more time to researching the subject: many of her stories are just first-person accounts from the dwellers she'd interviewed. One notable passage was how the author described that as one descended lower and lower in the tunnels to an environment of complete isolation and darkness, the inhabitants became weirder and weirder--almost animalistic.

But with the ability to exploit water and electrical resources, groups of people can be born, live and die without hardly ever coming out of the tunnels...

6. The crime rate is directly proportionate to
the quality of life for the working poor.

But we can't worry about creating a living wage right now. We've got to help the big businesses create an even wider gap between rich and poor.
