Jet owned by part owner of Red Sox tied to US (connect. to Rendition)
Edited on Sun Mar-20-05 12:33 PM by Rose Siding
WASHINGTON -- A Gulfstream jet owned by a part owner of the Boston Red Sox is also used by the US government for missions around the world.
...
The jet, which used registration number N85VM and now uses N227SV, was spotted in Cairo on Feb. 18, 2003, shortly after a suspected extremist preacher disappeared from his home in Milan in a case that Italian prosecutors are investigating as a kidnapping, according to the Chicago Tribune, which first reported the plane's unusual flight history.
...
Among the other part-owners of the Red Sox is The New York Times Co., which owns the Globe.

Between June 2002 and January of this year, the plane has flown to Afghanistan, Morocco, Dubai, Jordan, Italy, Japan, Switzerland, Azerbaijan, and the Czech Republic, and made 82 visits to Dulles International Airport outside Washington, D.C., according to the Chicago Tribune, which cited records from the Federal Aviation Administration.

The plane is owned by Assembly Pointe Aviation Inc, according to records from the Federal Aviation Administration.
Morse is the sole officer of Assembly Pointe Aviation.

When the plane flies for Morse, it sports the Red Sox logo on the tail, but the logo is masked for most government missions, Richards said. ''He loves the team and he loves to advertise them," Richards said. ''When the plane goes out of the country, we cover it up."

1. It's possible/likely the Red Sox have no knowlege.
Many corporations share ownership and use of high end business jets. The things are expensive, and if a corporation can't use it 24/7 then is just sits there, leaking money. By sharing it, they get more jet for their money, and can often "afford" a much more capable aircraft.

During the times a corporation doesn't "have" the jet, they likely have no information on what it is being used for.

OTOH, I'm not aware of whether the US Gov. is allowed to share use with corporations. Seems there could be some eithical questions there. Anyone more knowlegable on that side of the coin?

2. The 'ethical questions' regard kidnapping and torture.

It's been an open secret, reported by several that US CIA uses corporate jet to kidnap suspected terror connected subjects and deliver them to foreign countries that don't have any quams on torturing to extract information.

If you have any ethical questions they should be directed at this. Since when has America been the one to torture. I thought we were the ones to uphold the Rule of Law.

9. 2 separate ethical points.
Regarding torture, there is no question in my mind. We (the US) should not be in the torture business, and we should not "farm out" that business to other countries. Not only is it unethical, it is also falsely productive, in that you can't trust the information it provides.

The ethical question I was originally referencing regarded the US Gov. share/leasing a business jet with corporations. As I mentioned, a sharing agreement allows both parties to operate more cheaply, or to operate a more capable, or lavish, jet than would otherwise be possible. This raises a question of how the lease/share was arranged, was it a perk for corporate sponsors of campaigns, will Gov. personel travelling on this jet be strongly influences by the other partners in the jet, etc...

Thanks for the chance to clarify my question.

10. So, a jet part owned by the major mainstream media source in U.S. (NYT)
Was being used by U.S. Intelligence to secretly fly people to foreign locations, to be tortured. Unfortunately, this doesn't really surprise me.

12. Boston Red Sox Plane Flies Through Shannon on way to Guantanamo
I didn't know to post this in SPORTS or MASSACHUSETTS or POLITICS, but since it is new I'll post it in LBN and let the mods decide. This is a continuation of the CIA torture plane story, with a Red Sox twist. Maybe this is why Schilling has been so cozy with *????

Boston Red Sox Plane Flies Through Shannon on way to Guantanamo
by redjade Sunday, Mar 20 2005, 5:12pm
national / anti-war / other press

How weird can this story get?!

Quote: 'The Red Sox logo was visible, for example, in photos taken at an air show in Schenectady, N.Y., on Aug. 23, 2003, eight days after the Gulfstream returned to Washington from an around-the-world flight that included Anchorage; Osaka, Japan; Dubai; and Shannon.

The logo was not visible when the Gulfstream was photographed during a fuel stop in Shannon on June 12, 2004.' Ireland closer to Boston than Berlin? Yep.

================================================

Jet's Travels Cloaked in Mystery

by John Crewdson and Tom Hundley
the Knight-Ridder Tribune Newspaers

(KRT) - Last June, the Boston Red Sox chartered an executive jet to help their manager make a quick visit home in the midst of the team's championship season. But what was the very same Gulfstream - owned by one of the Red Sox's partners, but presumably without the team's logo on its fuselage - doing in Cairo on Feb. 18, 2003? Perhaps by coincidence, Feb. 18, 2003, was the day an Islamic preacher known as Abu Omar, who had been abducted in Italy the previous day and forced aboard a small plane, also arrived at the Cairo airport. Omar, whose given name is Osama Nasr Mostafa Hassan, was imprisoned by the Egyptians and, he claims, brutally tortured.

<....>

But Federal Aviation Administration records obtained by the Chicago Tribune show that Gulfstream N85VM has been many places around the world that the Red Sox have almost certainly never gone. Between June 2002 and January of this year, the Gulfstream made 51 visits to Guantanamo, Cuba, site of the U.S. naval base where more than 500 terrorism suspects are behind bars. A week later the Gulfstream was back in Washington, D.C., headed for Shannon, Ireland.

<....>

The Red Sox logo was visible, for example, in photos taken at an air show in Schenectady, N.Y., on Aug. 23, 2003, eight days after the Gulfstream returned to Washington from an around-the-world flight that included Anchorage; Osaka, Japan; Dubai; and Shannon. The logo was not visible when the Gulfstream was photographed during a fuel stop in Shannon on June 12, 2004. But when the plane turned up at Denver's Centennial Airport in February of this year, a photo showed it was sporting not only the Sox logo but a new registration number, N227SV.

<....>

FAA records do show, however, that at 4:19 a.m. local time on Feb. 18, 2003, the Gulfstream was on the ground at HECA, the designation for Cairo International Airport, with a flight plan for a return to Dulles with a fuel stop in Shannon.
