Hillary Clinton Allies Join DNC
--------------------------------
By John F. Harris
Sunday, March 20, 2005; Page A04
Washington Post
--------------------------------
People who are eager to see a Hillary Rodham Clinton angle in nearly every Washington personnel move -- and three years before the next presidential election, there are plenty of those -- will enjoy a frisson from the latest machinations at the Democratic National Committee. The new communications director for the party is Karen Finney, who served as deputy press secretary in the first lady's office during the Clinton years. She was also a spokeswoman for Clinton's successful Senate campaign in New York in 2000.

Finney's move is part of a shuffling at the DNC under new Chairman Howard Dean. She is replacing Jano Cabrera, who said he is headed to a beach in Maui and will announce longer-term plans by May 1. Research director Jason Miner is also moving on, and will be replaced by Mike Gehrke, who like Finney worked in the Clinton White House, and later did research for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.

As for Hillary Clinton's political network, it's been a busy month, with longtime friend and Democratic operative Harold Ickes taking over America Coming Together, the influential labor-backed political group, and New York-based consultant Howard Wolfson taking on a contract to shape strategy at the state Democratic Party in New York.

1. Hillary Clinton needs to stay where she is.
Putting her on the ticket in 2008 will throw the election to Jebbie.

2. She will lose in '06 making the whole thing moot.
She won't be re-elected if NYers think she's just gonna spend her Senate term running for president.

5. She'll be re-elected in NY either way.

She's popular and most people don't think about whether a candidate is looking to go to the White House.

during that campaign. The GOP will make sure of that.

The New York state GOP has nobody who can beat her, except Rudy and he thinks the Senate is beneath him.....

32. I think you're probably right.
I think she'll moderate her language and votes for the next 3 years and win the nomination without having to "run left" for the primaries just because of her popularity among the base. She'll trumpet her moderate tone for the general election, but she'll have a hard time getting past her image problems with the 10-12% of the electorate that's really up for grabs. Then it becomes a matter of who she's up against. McCain, she loses bad. Condi or Rudy and its a tossup. Frist or any of the other pretenders and she wins running away.

10. If she is our nominee in '08, all the right-wing crazies will come out
of the woodwork, and many Independents and moderate Republicans will not consider voting for her. The thought of Bill in the White House again will elicit a very strong gag response in many, many non-Dems.

I'm also afraid that if she runs in the primaries, she will split the Democratic party into pro-Clinton and anti-Clinton factions, which would make the Republicans jump for joy. I'd say "dance with glee," but many fundies don't approve of dancing.

34. I believe that it will actually get worse with Sen. Clinton as our nominee
And it won't be just the crazies. There are a lot of independents, d moderate Dems, and a few moderate Repubs out there who have a real Yuck! response to Clinton at this point. I think that they will stay home if she is our nominee rather than vote for whatever piece of trash the Pubbies nominate.

A lot of my friends, neighbors and family share that opinion, and I think that they are pretty average voters in the middle of the spectrum. And a lot of these people want to get the hell our of Iraq and can't figure out anymore why we're still there, apparently unlike Sen. Clinton.

I'll vote for her, but I just don't think that she can win, no matter how popular she is in New York. She just has a lot of baggage.

4. Is it possible that Hillary doesn't want to be president?
And that she just wants Dems, herself included, to have a little say in the Senate?

In other words, the stronger the Dem party, the stronger each Dem senator will be.

Personally, I think the party would do well to listen to Hillary. Winning that senate seat in NY and maintaining high positive ratings in that state is a good thing!

During his campaign for DNC Chariman he never said that he would get rid of or exclude DLCers from positions in the DNC.

24. I perceived him as more independent than it appears he is. Many people
pointed out that he had broken from the DLC and he was to be a change from the same old thing. If I wanted to see more Clintonistas and the DLC take charge , I would have campaigned for Roemer or Rosenberg!

35. Yet HE never said it
The problem is that when people find a politician that they like the start to believe that he/she agrees with them 100%, and then are shocked when they find out that this is not the case.

8. Finney has worked for a range of Dems
snip>
Update: The National Journal reports Kerry's campaign today "announced the official addition of several 'key new staff' for the race's final weeks. Joe Lockhart joins as a senior adviser, while Joel Johnson will be director of rapid response; other additions include Lori Denham, Karen Finney, Dr. Susan Rice and former Congressman Mel Levine. Rumor has it that the recent Swift Boat skirmishes are at least part of the reason behind the hires."

more recently...

Filling the newly created $107,000 position of Stabenow's deputy chief of staff for communications is Karen Finney, former scheduler for President Bill Clinton; press secretary for the 2000 campaign of Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton; and press secretary in 2004 for Elizabeth Edwards, wife of vice presidential nominee John Edwards.

11. A Clinton campaign will destroy the Democratic Party.
No mind, at this point, it is a neck-and-neck race between the Parties to see which implodes first.

Go ahead, DLC ... run her. Provide the mercy kill.

Put us all out of our misery

15. Hillary will win.
She's a great campaigner, an even greater fund-raiser, and she has a lot of markers from fellow Senators. Who cares about the right wing vote - was never going to a Democrat, whether Kerry, Clark or Clinton.

The middle of the electorate will vote for Hillary.

20. Fat Chance. Hillary is perceived as the liberal she isn't.
The former Goldwater girl is working hard to alter her perception to "moderate" and inclusive" but in so doing will alienate the base and won't get the moderates.

28. I'm with you.
People will be surprised how well she does. The first woman to be nominated by a major party will bring a lot of attention and enthusiasm out of the electorate.

That said, I'm not committed to anyone at this point.

But I think she'll run and I think she should run. The time is right.

19. who are these "people" this Harris writes of here?
who will enjoy "a frisson from the latest machinations"?

a frisson from the latest machinations ???

stretching one person, Karen Finney, into "Allies Join DNC" seems a bit extreme

this strikes me as more CorpMSM business as ususal tabloid gossip - more CorpMSM tinkering with public opinion and fate ... trying to influence future events ... why should this column of this guy's blurbs be thrown on a WashPost section dedicated to the topic of "Special Reports > Social Security"?

is this John F. Harris by chance any relation to the John F. Harris who works for the Carlyle Group? just wondering
http://www.thecarlylegroup.com/eng/team/l5-team423.html

This is the same 'reporter' who wrote:
Mr. Bush Catches a Washington Break

http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/wp-dyn?pagename=article&contentId=A47313-2001May5¬Found=true

~snip~

"The difference is not in journalists' attitudes toward Bush or their willingness to report aggressively on him. It is that nearly all the political and institutional forces that constitute Washington writ large have aligned to make Bush's life more pleasant than Clinton's ever was, even at the start of his presidency.

"There are many small reasons: Republicans and Democrats alike seem exhausted from the negativity and scandal of the Clinton era. The Bush team is mostly competent and well-focused, so it has given adversaries fewer handles to grab. And even his opponents seem to think the new president is a likable enough fellow.

"Above all, however, there is one big reason for Bush's easy ride: There is no well-coordinated corps of aggrieved and methodical people who start each day looking for ways to expose and undermine a new president."

~snip~

oh, and Condi graced the front page of the Sunday LA Times print edition today in a full-color large photo front and center ... more CorpMSM forcing on us what they want us to be thinking ... at least, imho ...

It is amazing how the Illiberal Conservative Media (ICM) prefer writing about their obsessions (in this case Hillary) than about things that actually concern us (budget, war, jobs, ...).
