Computer shipments, new orders decline

By Ed Frauenheim
CNET News.com

In a discouraging sign for the information technology industry, shipments of computers and related products dropped 10.5 percent from July to August, the U.S. Department of Commerce said Thursday.

New orders for computers and related products fell 2.3 percent during the same period. August shipments totaled $7.67 billion, and new orders were valued at $7.96 billion.

Computers and related products--a category that includes computer storage devices and peripheral gear such as printers--suffered a worse downturn than the overall manufacturing sector. In general, new orders for manufactured durable goods fell 0.9 percent in August, to $173.3 billion, while shipments fell 2.9 percent to $176.3 billion, the Commerce Department said.

The report runs counter to more encouraging news about the direction of IT spending. Credit ratings company Standard & Poor's recently said the IT hardware industry is witnessing "modest and sporadic" signs of growth. Earlier this summer, research firms IDC and Gartner concluded that the PC market grew faster than expected in the second quarter.

gee, if I hadn't been told by the media whores that the recession had ended over two years ago, I would think things were still in decline. </sarcasm>

2. Maybe I need to change my field
I haven't been able to find a job in the computer biz yet, after being laid off.

Maybe everyone in my situation needs to start learning the right way to stack boxes in supermarket stock rooms. Assuming that's how they do things. I don't even know!

Dumpster diving. Does that have a good benefits package?

6. Dunkin Donuts
Theirs is the dumpster you want. If you can round up some change to get a cup of coffee, you've got breakfast. If you live close enough, you can also call up Shakey's Pizza and order a carry-out about an hour before closing, and then go by and pick it up (from the dumpster) after they close. These are old tricks I learned during Raygunomics.

3. They are going to have to build defects into computers soon
Otherwise people will never have to upgrade. CPUS are getting too fast for the normal average human being. Only hard core gamers will have to upgrade.

8. This should lead to increased productivity
and better job satisfaction.

Who would want more time pits, anyway? I already waste enough time with the ones I already have, thank you, and don't need to waste it 'faster'.

B-)
