Deputy resigns in Taser incident
http://www.tallahassee.com/mld/tallahassee/news/local/11350965.htm

A rookie Leon County Sheriff's deputy has turned in his badge after an internal investigation concluded he wrongfully used a Taser on a local U.S. Marine reservist.

At a news conference Friday, Sheriff Larry Campbell issued a public apology to Cpl. Demar Jackson, who was the target of Deputy John Daly's Taser on March 7, and subsequently arrested and charged with resisting arrest without violence. Campbell said the charges have been dropped.

"Pure and simple, we made a mistake," said a somber-faced Campbell, who has been a statewide advocate on the effectiveness of Tasers in law enforcement. "The arrest was wrong. The tasing was wrong."

He also said Daly would have been fired if he had not resigned. The county is currently reviewing its Taser use policies to see if any changes need to be made.

The news reached a surprised and relieved Jackson, who had returned from a six-month military tour of duty in Africa just days before the incident.

2. If that hadn't gone down along these lines,
I suspect there would have been a lot of problems in the future for the police department in that area, not the least of which would have been mass protests.

This is one of those cases that was almost open and shut from the reading. Deputy shoots wrong man with tazer after getting wrong apartment. made it look pretty open and shut.

It's unacceptable that it took 2 weeks to make this decision, if he'd shot someone with a gun like that he'd be in jail on charges a lot faster... as it is now, I'd like to see the civil suit against the department.

5. There won't be any civil suit. This Marine will be paid off
I suspect he will be compensated rather well too. At at the taxpayers expense of course.

3. Thanks for posting this article. Really glad he's gone.
I read the first D.U. thread a few days ago concerning the tasing right after it happened. There were comments from a strange D.U. sector claiming Jackson had it coming to him for not doing everything the cop demanded, even though he was at the wrong address.

The fact the sheriff said Daly would have been fired if he hadn't resigned tells me they know this was dead wrong in every way.

Since when does "not turning around" immediately when it's demanded entitle you to a tasering you'll never forget? Good lord.

6. Your welcome

Makes you wonder if some people would drop their drawers and bend over just because a policemen tells them to. I show police office the same respect he affords me. That is the way it is supposed to work. After all it us who are paying their salaries.

7. Little off topic but I tend to do that.
What concerns me NNNOLHI, is that the rookie cop, the one who resigned could get a job at a security company.

Ashamed and ridiculed, he could become bitter and then be a real problem.

Conversely he might learn something from this and become a better man.

Just my two cents.

8. Chances are he will be bagging groceries somewhere after this incident
Where he can't hurt nobody else. I really doubt he will ever be in any position of authority again.

10. Putting a Taser Into a Rookie's Hands Is Begging for an Incident
It's bad enough that seasoned cops are treating these barbaric instruments as toy guns.

I get the feeling this officer must have had horrendous training.

11. I for one think he should be re-educated...
How dare he even think a member of our armed forces could do any wrong when instead he should have been actively patrolling our lib'ral school grounds for 6-10 year old traitors!

:sarcasm:

12. Is this the only resignation in a Taser incident?
Do you have to be a soldier to get justice?

13. He will be working at another PD within 3 months.
Hes just resigned so he can avoid the stigma of being fired. After the story blows over other cities will be clamoring to hire such a 'tough cop'.
