Union wants raises for teachers, employees (Baton Rouge)
BATON ROUGE (AP) -- One of the state's major teacher unions wants the governor and lawmakers to include college professors and school employees in any pay raise plans for teachers.

Steve Monaghan, president of the Louisiana Federation of Teachers, said Friday the organization wants $2,000 pay raises for public school teachers and college faculty and $1,500 boosts for support workers, like bus drivers, janitors and teaching assistants -- a proposal that carries a $200 million price tag.

''And we don't even believe that is economic justice. That's just going to be holding our ground,'' Monaghan said at the LFT headquarters as part of a statewide road show touting the union's agenda for the legislative session that begins April 25. <snip
