US lawmakers seek China policy review
US congressmen have launched a signature drive urging US President George W. Bush to review the longstanding "one China" policy, a Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) lawmaker said yesterday.

"While China has become the US government's biggest enemy after the end of the Cold War and the fall of the Soviet Union, many US congressmen have been wondering whether the `one China' policy makes sense any more and whether it is necessary to re-examine, or even better yet, revise it to a `one China, one Taiwan' policy," DPP Legislator Chiang Chao-yi (???) said.

He was quoting US congressmen, who are members of the pro-Taiwan sub-group in the US Congress -- the Taiwan Caucus.

1. TSU calls on Washington to update TRA
Edited on Mon Apr-11-05 12:24 AM by dArKeR
On the 26th anniversary of the enactment of the Taiwan Relations Act (TRA), the Taiwan Solidarity Union (TSU) urged the US to add a clause that enables the people of Taiwan to have rights to determine their own future since China's approved "Anti-Secession" Law has unilaterally ruined the status-quo of the Taiwan Strait.

"China's Anti-Secession Law not only unilaterally sabotages the cross-strait status-quo but also violates the TRA," TSU Secretary-General Chen Chien-ming (???) told a new conference yesterday.

Chen said the US established diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China (PRC) on Jan. 1, 1979 and simultaneously terminated its relations with the Republic of China (ROC).

Shame on the KMT

As a child I only knew of Taiwan from the "Made in Taiwan" mark stamped on the bottom of most of my plastic toys. I asked my father innumerable times where Taiwan was and I received the answer "It's in China." But of course I was confused, as I had other toys stamped with "Made in China" on them. Why did they not have one label?

Now I am living in Taiwan. I have been here for more than three years, am well aware of country's history and have keenly watched Taiwanese politics. I am truly astounded at the long history of struggle that Taiwan has ventured through in its history and I am glad to see the great pride that the Taiwanese people take in knowing that their country has fought its way to near the top of the world in the quality of economic, social and political conditions.

Sadly however it has become increasingly clear that some Taiwanese do not respect the laws and political freedoms of the Taiwanese people.

2. First the recent anti-secessionist laws in China,
then the anti-Japanese protests in China and now this item. It sure looks like things are ratcheting up. Fat chance the Chinese will help with North Korea if we come up with a One China, One Taiwan policy. Are joint war games of China and Russia still on for this fall?
