WASHINGTON · Never known as a media darling, South Florida U.S. Rep. Clay Shaw has emerged from years of low-profile legislating to take a prominent role in the national debate over Social Security.
Blinking uncertainly in the bright lights of sudden fame, Shaw's face and laid-back demeanor show up regularly now on TV talk shows and news reports to discuss his alternative to President Bush's plan for overhauling the program. His news interviews since the first of the year have amounted to 444, according to a list compiled by his staff.
Major newspapers regularly come calling. Syndicated columnist David Broder has spread Shaw's beliefs across the country. And editorial writers can't seem to get enough of Shaw's thoughts about how to restructure Social Security without destroying it.
Bush indirectly helped bring Shaw to the nation's attention by turning Social Security's finances into a high-priority issue. Now that the president's plan to create investment accounts appears to be faltering, the news media and advocacy groups have looked to the grandfatherly figure from Florida to present something a little different, something that might appeal to senior citizens and Democrats as well as Republicans.
