Northern Peru hit with 6.1 magnitude earthquake

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Northern Peru was hit with a magnitude 6.1 earthquake on Monday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The temblor struck at 10:54 am ET.

...very short newsblurb...

here's what I found on earthquakes in Peru:

http://www2.ess.ucla.edu/~giovanni/peru.html

excerpt:

Previous earthquakes in 1868, 1784, and 1604 ruptured the same segment of the plate boundary as the 2001 earthquake. Based on intensity and tsunami reports the 1868 and 1604 events were larger than the 2001 earthquake while the 1784 event may have been smaller. Assuming the last earthquake to rupture the southern Peru segment was 1896 then the time between events (133 years) and a convergent rate of 9 cm/yr suggests 12 meters of accumulated tectonic slip prior to the 2001 earthquake. Preliminary estimates of the slip during the rupture of the largest asperity during the 2001 earthquake are 9 to 15 meters, suggesting that a portion of the plate boundary was locked between events. The occurrence of the 2001 earthquake provides further evidence that the mode and size of earthquake rupture along the Peru coast has changed between successive earthquake cycles.

1. Pachamama's doing a whole lot of shaking!
My husband is in Tokyo right now on biz....they had a 6.1 there yesterday...the difference though is that Japan atleast builds their buildings to withstand up to 8.0+ without significant damage...

Unfortunately, in Peru they don't...I've seen areas in Peru that could fall over with a strong wind...

Any reports on casualties?

3. Seriously, I get global earthquake reports every day and there
Edited on Mon Apr-11-05 01:58 PM by smirkymonkey
has been an enormous amount of activity all over the place. Magnitudes of 5 and higher, but many occur offshore or in sparsely populated areas so they are not reported.

Sooner or later they are going to hit a major city. I wonder if Mother Nature has just about had it with us.

Update: just got another report, a 6.5 off the coast of New Guinea.

5. Yep, Pachamama (Mother Earth) has just about had it with us....
Back in 1997, when I was down in the Amazon of Peru and Equador, the Shamans said that if people on this planet didn't stop raping Pachamama of her blood (oil) and other resources, that she was going to shake us humans off like a dog shakes off fleas...

The Shamans said that humans forget Pachamama was here before them...They said that we would start seeing more "activity"....

And your right, the seismic activity has been huge in the last 9 months...

6. Did you watch SuperVolcano on Discovery last night?
Actually a very interesting movie. Cheese ball parts to it, but the basic story of a supervolcano erupting in Yellowstone is accurate, the USA would be pretty well toasted and the world would be affected for years.

8. But I want to be left behind! I just want the poncho to protect me from
the decay and excrement from these whackjobs being "sucked" away from the planet into the Rapture....

I'm looking forward to a planet without them...I think it will be a much better place!
