Army aiming to enlist minorities
http://www.thejournalnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20050429/NEWS02/504290341/1020/NEWS04

At the end of the sunlit corridor leading to Putnam Valley High School's cafeteria, Sgt. 1st Class Terry Messman Jr. and Sgt. Ronald Colon stand at a table spread with glossy Army brochures, recruitment cards, and chunky, black ballpoint pens emblazoned in gold letters with the words "An Army of One."

"What about the war going on?" asks Justin Otero, a slender, 17-year-old senior with curly hair who has stopped on his way to lunch to look over the materials and chat with the camouflage-clad recruiters.

Messman, a 32-year-old with 13 years of service, concedes that some soldiers wind up in Iraq, but the benefits of enlisting outweigh the risks, he said.

"Is it 100 percent that you would go to Iraq? Absolutely not," Messman says. "The Army can pay for your college, help you get training and make you more physically fit. You'll be much more marketable when you come out."

17. You may be much more DEAD when you "COME OUT" GRAPHIC PHOTO
Comes these photos of the troops not having fun for Halliburton, Brown and Root and Bechtel.

A dead GI from the Ist Infantry Division lies where killed in house to house raids in Falluja. As he
entered the house the home owner jumped up and killed him.

A dead American is loaded on the hood of a Humvee after being killed by a sniper in Baghdad.

2. Correcto mundo. The Army can also maim you and give you
physiological problems that will affect your every breathing moment.

If you're fortunate enough to come back in one piece, you can always hope that radiation poisoning from depleted uranium does not cause birth defects in your children or an early cancer for yourself.

4. They're doing it at a local lower-end community college
Yeah. Grab up those poor kids. How dare they want a decent education.

Oh, that's right. Those kids aren't as affluent in their "pursuit of happiness."

Silly me...

6. Here too
Except at my community college they can also throw out the bone of speeding up the citizenship process, since a majority of students here are immigrants.

10. Why don't they setup recruiting booths outside churches?
Surely these pro-life "Christians" are all in favor of smoking some ragheads, eh?

11. They were actually doing that too.
Naturally, the parishoners were outraged at the idea. I can no longer find the link, but it appeared in DU.

14. "You can be Black, and Navy too."
During the early 1970s, the Navy Recruiting Command issued several posters that featured African-American themes and individuals, as well as others that showed racially integrated Navy activities. This page presents copies of relevant posters that are in the Naval Historical Center's collections.

Racial Incidents Onboard USS Kitty Hawk (CVA-63) and USS Constellation (CVA-64) in 1972.
15. The Navy's recruitment program for most of 1972 which resulted in the lowering of standards for enlistment, accepting a greater percentage of mental category IV and those in the lower half of category III, not requiring recruits in these categories to have completed their high school education, and accepting these people without sufficient analysis of their previous offense records, has created many of the problems the Navy is experiencing today.
16. The reduction of time in recruit training from 9 to 7 weeks, thus sending those personnel who do not qualify for advanced training in "A" schools from the street to the fleet in less than two months, appears to result in inadequate preparation for shipboard duty.
17. The investigation disclosed an alarming frequency of successful acts of sabotage
and apparent sabotage on a wide variety of ships and stations within the Navy.

15. "Who was that idiot?"
asked a TV reporter who arrived at the end of the media show. When he was told the name, it drew a blank. DeLay at that time was a national nobody, and his claim that blacks and browns crowded him and other good conservatives out of Vietnam seemed so outlandish and self-serving that no one bothered to file a news report on the congressman's remarks."

18. "Aiming to"??? They've been doing it for years, especially the last few!!
Idgits one and all!

I stopped a young Hispanic man in 2003. He was my waiter during lunch and he gave me an Army of One pen to sign my check with. That led to a conversation and me sharing with him articles I had printed down to read during lunch. I saw him a couple of weeks later and he thanked me and no, he was not going to join even though he'd been promised "express" citizenship for himself and his family. That was a special moment in time!!
