Putin plans to provide Palestinians with arms
http://feeds.bignewsnetwork.com/?sid=eaf405b5346d3cce

Big News Network.com Friday 29th April, 2005

Russian President Vladimir Putin has wrapped up his historical visit to the Middle East with a day in the Palestinian territories.

During his stay he promised to help rebuild the Palestinian infrastructure and provide assistance to restore the economy.

In a more controversial measure he plans to provide the Palestinian Authority with 50 armored personnel carriers and two helicopters.

Arming the Palestinians is likely to incur the wrath of Israel which due to its control of the borders could block the offer. Israel insists the Palestinians combat militants in the territories and maintain security, however they refuse to allow Palestinian security officers to be armed. Israel even refuses to allow Palestinian police to carry a pistol.

Putin's visit to the Middle East comes at an unusual time. On Thursday he visited Israel, the first time a Russian leader has visited the Jewish state. He met with Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and President Moshe Katsav.

1. Once again, Putin gives Bush the finger
He's very cagily positioning Russia as a pro-Arab country--though I'm not sure how it'll fly in the middle east, considering the brutality with which the Russians have attempted to surpress the Chechen rebellion.

4. I think China will be staking a claim pretty soon as well.
The world is beginning to realize that oil is finate and they see the US solidifying it's position on top of oil. Russia wants to do the same and china will not be far behind. In fact I believe China is a close ally of Iran and getting closer. The world may just come to blows over the world's oil reserves and it will be because the US will refuse to share. To the US an even split is 90% for the US and 10% for rest of world...
