Protest prompts change at CU
School joins consortium that bans sweatshop products

By Jenn Ooton
The Daily Times-Call

BOULDER — Six University of Colorado students who chained themselves to sewing machines in front of the chancellor’s office Thursday morning to emphasize the cruelty of sweatshop labor celebrated victory Thursday evening.

Vice Chancellor Paul Tabolt announced to the protesters that CU will join the Worker Rights Consortium, a national group that monitors working conditions in apparel factories in developing nations.

The students, members of the World Worker Justice Committee, said in mid-morning that they didn’t plan to eat or leave until interim Chancellor Phil DiStefano met a list of anti-sweatshop demands.

The women beseeched CU to join 130 U.S. universities and colleges that make up the consortium, which monitors factory conditions where university apparel is manufactured. <snip>

3. Message to young people! You CAN make a difference!
Though it may seem that today's technology and other societal conditions are more daunting in terms of influencing change than kids felt during the 60's, the women demonstrated that it CAN be done!

Don't give up! Don't aquiesce! Think for yourselves! Do something about what you are concerned about!

Kudos to these women at standing up for their principles and getting something to happen as a result! My hats off to them!

Others take note and make a difference where you are when something is wrong! Fix it!
