B.C. man detained by Syria

OTTAWA – A man holding dual Syrian-Canadian citizenship was arrested in Syria two weeks ago upon his return to the Middle East country, the Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed Thursday.

CBC News has learned that the man, Maher Ahmad Zaydan, is from Surrey, and had travelled to Syria with his wife and two children, who were not arrested, but are still there.

Canada has asked for consular access to meet Zaydan, said a foreign affairs spokesperson.

Okay, tell me again why we (Canada) haven't severed diplomatic relations with Syria. Enquiring minds want to know.
