Black Students Sue School District Over Racial Harassment
Classmates Accused Of Using Racial Epithets, Circulating Racist Literature

VALENCIA, Calif. -- Black high school students who claim their complaints of being harassed by white students were ignored by a Santa Clarita Valley school district sued the district Thursday.

The civil rights lawsuit was filed in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles on behalf of four black students who claim they have been subjected "to an unremitting campaign of hate and bias at Valencia High, where African-Americans are approximately 5 percent of the Valencia student population," said their attorney, Gloria Allred.

A message left with a representative for the William S. Hart Union High School District was not immediately returned. A representative for the school referred questions to the district.

Allred said some students on campus "openly espouse white supremacist values," use racial epithets and circulate racist...

In prior cases, the idea what schools must protect students from a hostile environment has been established: one involved a 12-year-old girl being sexually harassed and threatened with rape by a classmate, and the school did nothing despite the parents' attempts to work with them. The parents sued after reading in the girl's diary that she was going to attempt suicide. By that point she may have moved to another school.

The other case that comes to mind was somewhere out west and involved a Jewish high school student being threatened and abused by his good Christian classmates and teachers. Had things like "Hitler was right" and painted on his locker, and listened to teachers tell him that the "Jews killed Jesus."

Can't wait to see how this one turns out.
