FRANKFORT, Ky. -- Lt. Gov. Steve Pence said yesterday he learned earlier this month about allegations state workers were being hired on the basis of politics but didn't ask state police to investigate because no one asked him to do so.
Pence said he had heard about the allegations after a state employee spoke with a Transportation Cabinet lawyer, and the cabinet began an inquiry May 2.
"To my knowledge, nothing was brought to me saying, 'Will KSP investigate this?' Just because someone makes an allegation doesn't mean you immediately assume there was criminal conduct involved," Pence, a former federal prosecutor, said at a news conference.
"I did not hear, nor did anyone bring to me, a need to get a criminal investigation started. If anything had been brought to me, I would have reviewed it, and if it was appropriate we would," said Pence, who also is the Justice Cabinet secretary.
