Laura Bush Faces Protesters in Jerusalem
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=514&e=1&u=/ap/20050522/ap_on_re_mi_ea/laura_bush

First lady Laura Bush was met by protesters as she visited two of Jerusalem's holiest sites Sunday. Mrs. Bush, who is on a Middle Eastern tour meant, in part, to help defuse anti-American sentiment, placed a note in the Western Wall, Judaism's holiest shrine. She wrote the note on the plane to Jerusalem, but told reporters she wanted to keep its contents private.

SNIP

A group of women studying inside the mosque were clearly annoyed at the intrusion and waved their fingers at the U.S. entourage. Despite the chaos at both sites, Mrs. Bush kept smiling and did not say much.

At the Western Wall, dozens of protesters stood nearby, shouting, "Free Pollard now." Jonathan Pollard is serving a life sentence in a U.S. prison for spying for Israel.

The first lady was mobbed by protesters and local reporters, and Secret Service agents and guards had to physically hold back the crowd as she approached the wall.

Note- Whose brilliant idea is it to send the xanax queen over there?

110. AP: Protesters Heckle Laura Bush in Jerusalem
?x=235&y=345&sig=yE37Wq_YZcr8Qh_lw7wdmA--

By NEDRA PICKLER, Associated Press Writer 1 hour, 43 minutes ago

JERUSALEM - Laura Bush waded into Middle East tensions on Sunday during chaotic visits to sacred religious sites, where crowds and hecklers grew so rowdy that armed guards had to restrain them.

America's first lady said what she witnessed showed that passions are running high among Palestinians and Israelis. "The United States will do what they can in this process," she said, urging both sides to work for peace.

Before entering the ruins of an 8th-century palace in the West Bank town of Jericho, Mrs. Bush told reporters, "As you can tell from our day here, this is a place of emotion, everywhere we went, from the Western Wall to the Dome of the Rock to here."

At the Western Wall, Judaism's holiest shrine, protesters demanded that the U.S. release of an American Jew imprisoned for spying for Israel. At her stop nearby at the Dome of the Rock, she faced heckling from angry Palestinians. One man yelled, "How dare you come in here! Why your husband kill Muslim?"

85. Actually, in some parts of Iran, that shows WAY too much face
You pull it down to the eyebrows, and stick the sides of the cloth between the teeth. No kidding. In conservative Iraq and parts of SA, they have a veil that goes on under that mess tied around the head that covers the forehead and everything south of the eyes, like a giant lone ranger mask, but loose.

However, in citified Pakistan, and urban areas of Palestine, the Laura style works just fine.

It depends on where you are and what your culture is. Not all Muslims march to the same drum, some look at hijab in symbolic fashion, others are more fundamental about it.

In the Palestinian context, she was right in the middle and on the money.

96. That was common in Iran, during the Shah
Especially in the holy cities, Qum and Masjed, during the holidays, when the citygals would go home to see their families.

But back then, it was those hotpants and halter tops and those high wedge shoes or lace up boots. Funny as hell. They all looked like the backup gals for James Brown, doing that signature HOTPANTS! number! The see-through chador, made of very light material, was also a popular choice!

98. All hijab MEANS is "covering"
The covering is accomplished in a variety of ways. Some simply use a long raincoat and a scarf, or a long dress and scarf (more modern and western). Others wear chaderi, chadors, burkhas or whatever the local costume du jour is. So Laura was observing the custom of hijab, by covering her bod and her head.

Margaret Thatcher had a great hijab when she went to Saudi Arabia years ago...a lurid blue long sleeved, ankle length boxy dress, and the biggest, boxiest lurid blue hat with a net veil. Even in that getup, she looked quite formidable.

They designated her an Honorary Man for the visit...!

8. Laura Bush Heckled at Islamic Holy Shrine
Laura Bush Heckled at Islamic Holy Shrine

Laura Bush Heckled at Islamic Site in Jerusalem During Tour to Defuse Anti-American Sentiment

By AMY TEIBEL Associated Press Writer

JERUSALEM May 22, 2005 — Anti-U.S. protesters heckled Laura Bush at a major Islamic holy shrine on Sunday, during a Mideast tour meant to defuse growing anti-American sentiment in the region.

As she approached the gold-capped Dome of the Rock Mosque, Muslim worshippers shouted, "How dare you come in here, and why are you hassling our Muslims?" As she entered the holy site, located on the fault line of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, one man seethed, "None of you belongs in here."

Israeli police formed a human chain around her, pressing together to push away protesters.

Earlier Sunday, Mrs. Bush placed a note in the Western Wall, Judaism's holiest shrine, in line with Jewish custom. About 40 demonstrators, demanding the release of convicted Israeli spy Jonathan Pollard, stood nearby, shouting, "Free Pollard Now."

39. I doubt there ever was much of a real Laura
She is probably exactly what that she-wolf Barbara wanted as daughter-in-law material for her idiot son. She sure as hell wouldn't have wanted him to marry a strong woman, who might have had a chance to get him to grow up and face responsibilities.

What you see...the rictus smile, the unfocused eyes, the slightly "not there" aura, is, unfortunately, the real Laura. Who else could live with the most hated man in the world? She is just another symbol of America's disdain for what the rest of the world thinks and feels.

Sending her to try to help America's image is nothing but another insult to people in the Muslim world. They know what we are doing, and sending the Stepford wife isn't going to help change things.

92. Yes, that sums her up very accurately.
Why on earth would they send Barbara Bush, who is part of the Bush administration? I can't imagine why they would feel she can contribute anything of substance, other than looking good.

But that's their style, isn't it? They never fix the problems they create. They just create yet another Public Relations Illusion that works pretty well here in the US, but bombs miserably anywhere else around the world.

I'm genuinely worried for Barbara. I can't imagine it's good for her to be exposed to the "Riff & Raff" out in the real world. It's pretty burly out there; and she's in for a rude awakening, if she believes people will welcome her with the red carpet, throwing flowers at her.

It's much, MUCH worse than that.

20. I have some degree of sympathy for her.
Given the plethora of friendly (staged) events she normally attends, it must be a rude eyeopener for her to see that type of disdain up close. Rebuilding the US image abroad is a herculean task and if given the choice of attempting that or digging a second Panama Canal with a childs plastic shovel and bucket; I believe she would choose the latter! I can only hope that on returning home, her first words to George are (ala Stan and Laurel), "Well George this is another fine mess you have gotten us into!". Isn't is a bit ironic that the job of cleaning up the US image abroad would fall primarily on the shoulders of three women, Secy Rice, Karen Hughes and Laura Bush?

84. CNN is covering it in rotation, so yes, they are
And they are not pulling punches. They are calling the protesters ANGRY, the situation FRIGHTENING, and noting that Laura put her head down and deliberately got the fuck out of there surrounded by police and a tightly packed cadre of SS. A reporter who was with her when she went inside said it was very tense in the masjid, and way worse when they came out. The remarks were unkind, to put it nicely.

I feel sorry for her, no one is paying her to do this shit. Hell, she was a pot smoking registered Dem when she married that fool, she made a mistake, and she is living her culture and sticking it out. I ain't gonna second-guess her, because I didn't see her name on the ballot.

87. You have a point
but I can't agree entirely. She is a full-fledged adult, college educated, powerful in her own way, and not under any real obligation to behave as a stepford wife if she doesn't want to. For me, one of the moments of truth was when Rod Paige, her hubby's flacky in the Dept.of Ed called teachers "terrorists". Not a peep from "teacher" Laura. I am glad that the media is covering the true nature of her visit, however.:)

NOW.. because Rove thinks that Bush is tanking, she's the new Laura Bush and is trying to give policy speeches. IT's an embarrassment. How disgusting to hide behind your wife like that... Unless the rumours are true, and they ARE going to run Laura Bush for office in a few years. Scary.

Israeli police and security guards surrounded Laura Bush
today during her visit to two of Jerusalem's most sacred sites,
the Western Wall and the Dome of the Rock.

Jim Hollander/European Pressphoto Agency
Laura Bush leaving after encountering protesters
at the Western Wall.

Mrs. Bush had taken steps to account for religious sensitivities at the sites, including donning a headscarf and taking off her shoes when she entered a mosque. According to television and print reporters, as she approached the Western Wall dozens of protesters shouted "Free Pollard now," a reference to Jonathan Pollard, who is serving a life sentence in an American prison for spying for Israel.

Mrs. Bush was mobbed by protesters and local reporters, and Secret Service agents and guards had to physically hold back the crowd, The Associated Press reported.

The A.P. reported that when she went to the Dome of the Rock, a mosque on a hilltop compound known to Muslims as Haram al Sharif and to Jews as Temple Mount, her presence and that of her entourage inside the shrine apparently upset a group of women praying, and outside the mosque, there were hecklers. One yelled, "How dare you come in here?" and "Why do you hassle our Muslims?" The A.P. said.

54. BBC: Laura Bush heckled in Jerusalem
Edited on Sun May-22-05 12:25 PM by Barrett808
US First Lady Laura Bush has been heckled by both Jewish and Muslim protesters during a visit to Jerusalem's holy sites.

As she slipped a note between stones of the Western Wall, Jewish protesters demanded the release of an Israeli jailed in the US for spying for Israel.

At the nearby Dome of the Rock mosque, Palestinians said she was not welcome.

The Temple Mount, known to Muslims as al-Haram al-Sharif, is Judaism's holiest site and Islam's third holiest.

A visit there by Israel's Prime Minister Ariel Sharon in 2000 sparked the current Palestinian intifada.

57. What did she expect?
Edited on Sun May-22-05 12:37 PM by Malva Zebrina
Adoration? I guess so. It goes with the concept of entitlement she has become so used to all of her life.

After her husband murdered thousands of Muslims? What did she expect?

That she could be better than Hillary Clinton?--one who has brains and has worked hard right up to the present moment, while this vacant minded, sponge off lazy bimbo, who is marketed and manufactured into some "image" as the nation's "librarian" arrives in the ME to "oversee" something or other that is billed as real important

and all dressed up in Muslim head gear?

What did she expect? That people there will love her because she has done great things all over the world for the oppressed? Sorry Ms one year librarian, they know the truth about you. You don't have those high ratings there. And you are not "entitled" there.

Actually, I don't think she even expects anything because I do not think she is capable of analysis, but is just following rote, the orders given to her.

She deserves to be mobbed, protested, hated and challenged by them. Her husband has killed thousands and thousands of their children--their families, brutally, without a moment's hesitation.

She campaigned for Bush's policies and now expects that seething, irate Muslims will just cheer and wave at her? Lady--you are out of your library card element--go back to your garden club, your botox appointments and back to fantasizing and dreaming up lewd jokes to tell on public TV--that suits your simple mind better. STay out of the government's business because you are a nothing in it but a cardboard joke and while you are at it, tell your kids to get a job.

Protesters Mob Laura Bush in Jerusalem

Sunday May 22, 2005 4:16 PM

By NEDRA PICKLER

Associated Press Writer

JERUSALEM (AP) - Protesters besieged Laura Bush during her visit Sunday to two of Jerusalem's most sacred sites, with Israeli police locking arms to restrain the crowd and Secret Service agents packed tightly around America's first lady.

Stepping into the long-running Mideast conflict, she appealed for Israelis and Palestinians to commit to working for peace and said Americans ``will do what they can in this process.''

The demonstrations at the Western Wall and the Dome of the Rock showed ``what an emotional place this is as we go from each one of these very, very holy sites to the next,'' Mrs. Bush said later in the West Bank town of Jericho as she stood at the ruins of the 8th-century Hisham's Palace.

``We're reminded again of what every one of us would want. ... What we all want is peace and the chance that we have right now to have peace, to have a Palestinian state living by a secure state of Israel, both living in democracy, is as close as we've been in a really long time,'' she said at an ancient home of Islamic spiritual leaders.

Mrs. Bush, who is on a tour intended partly to help defuse anti-American sentiment in the region, placed a note in the Western Wall, Judaism's holiest shrine. She wrote the note on the flight Sunday from Jordan to Israel, but wanted to keep the contents private, a spokeswoman said.

Laura Bush greeted with Muslim and Jewish protests
5/22/2005 3:06:00 PM GMT

First lady Laura Bush, on a Middle Eastern tour aimed at fixing the already damaged U.S. image among Middle East and Muslim countries, was met Sunday by protesters from both the Muslims and the Jews as she visited two of Jerusalem’s religious sites.

Mrs. Laura placed in what the Jews call Western Wall a note she wrote on the plane to Jerusalem, but told reporters she wanted to keep its contents private.

Then she went to Al Haram as-Sharif mosque, where one heckler yelled, "How dare you come in here?" and "Why do you hassle our Muslims?"

Wearing a black scarf around her head, Mrs. Bush entered the mosque and walked barefoot on the red carpet, gazing up at the gilded dome and the colorful mosaics on the marble walls.

<snip>
Inside the mosque, a group of Muslim women studying, waved their fingers at the U.S. entourage, expressing their anger at the intrusion.

Despite not being welcomed, the U.S. first lady kept smiling.

At the Western Wall, dozens of protesters stood nearby, shouting, "Free Pollard now."

Jewish and Muslim protesters heckled United States first lady Laura Bush when she visited a flashpoint Jerusalem holy site during a Middle East goodwill tour.

Dozens of nationalist Jews demanding Washington free convicted Israeli spy Jonathan Pollard shouted and waved placards at Bush Sunday as she visited the Western Wall in Jerusalem's Old City.

They were kept back by Israeli police and US Secret Service agents.

She inserted a small handwritten note between the stones and paused at the Wall for about 60 seconds before returning to her heavily guarded motorcade for the short trip to the adjacent Dome of the Rock mosque.

A crowd jostled Bush as she entered the mosque and a Palestinian worshipper cried at her: ``You are not welcome here. Why are you hassling our Muslims? How dare you come in here?''

Bush did not respond to him or an old woman inside the mosque who shouted ``Koran, Koran'' at her in Arabic.

JERUSALEM (CNN) -- First lady Laura Bush, on a political fence-mending tour of the Middle East, found herself the target of a tension- filled protest in Jerusalem on Sunday at one of Islam's holiest sites.

After a brief tour of the Dome of the Rock mosque, about 40 or 50 protesters surrounded Bush and her U.S. Secret Service detail as they departed, pushing to get closer and shouting: "How dare you come here" and "You don't belong in this mosque."

Security guards closed in tightly around the first lady while angry protesters pushed close.

As Secret Service agents shadowed her, Israeli security guards linked arms and forced a pathway for the first lady's entourage through the crowd to Bush's motorcade.

89. There were limits to what they could do, for once.
Unlike Europe, emptying out the Temple Mount and Wailing Wall areas of all inconvenient traces of humanity was NOT an option. If the Israeli security service had been dumb enough to try this (which they weren't), they would have touched off Intifada III.

No doubt Madame Chimpy's people demanded this in advance and were told, "If you think we're going to start another five years of riots, suicide bombings, and mutual hatred so that empty-headed shiksa can score some PR points, you goyim are even dumber than we've suspected all along. No dice."

I suspect that the Israeli authorities (not mention their Palestinian counterparts) would have preferred that this not happen at all. But NOOOOOOO... what a bunch of shit for brains fools.

did not show any protests from the other countries she visited but only when she was in Israel. I mean when did this woman ever express a concern about women's rights prior to being lead out to talk about them whenever the administration needs to cover up something. I said it in another post. This is nothing more than an attempt to make sure that she rates higher in the Gallup Polls, most popular woman in America than Hillary Clinton....

And remember whenever you think about the Bush people....Fall back on the expression John Mason used in the movie, The Rock. "Personally, I think you're a fucking idiot".

Protesters surround Laura Bush at Jerusalem mosque
First lady whisked away as emotions grow tense

Sunday, May 22, 2005 Posted: 8:33 PM EDT (0033 GMT)

JERUSALEM (CNN) -- First lady Laura Bush, on a political fence-mending tour of the Middle East, found herself the target of a tense protest Sunday in Jerusalem at one of Islam's holiest sites.

After a brief tour of the Dome of the Rock mosque, about 40 or 50 protesters surrounded Bush and her U.S. Secret Service detail as they departed, pushing to get closer and shouting: "How dare you come here" and "You don't belong in this mosque."

Security closed in tightly around the first lady as the angry Muslim protesters -- many expressing fury at the United States -- came very close to Bush.

As Secret Service agents shadowed her, Israeli security guards linked arms and forced a pathway for the first lady's entourage through the crowd to Bush's motorcade.

At one point, a boy made his way up to the first lady, and one guard momentarily pointed his gun at the boy, who ran away.

Protesters Heckle Laura Bush in Jerusalem

JERICHO, West Bank, May 22 -- First Lady Laura Bush made a religiously and politically charged journey through the Holy Land Sunday, fending off angry protesters to tour sacred Jewish and Muslim shrines before entering territory controlled by the Palestinian Authority to meet with a small group of women and visit an ancient palace.

Making six chaotic stops in less than half a day, the first lady said she witnessed firsthand some of the passions raging in the Middle East. She encountered Israelis protesting the imprisonment of Jonathan Pollard, an American Jew serving a life sentence for spying for Israel, and angry Muslims denouncing her visit to the Dome of the Rock, one of the most revered Muslim sites. Israeli police were forced to lock arms and form a human fence to keep several shouting men at bay while Laura Bush was ushered to her motorcade in Jerusalem's Old City.

The scene underscored "what an emotional place this is as we go from each one of these very, very holy spots to the next," the first lady told reporters at Hisham's Palace, an Islamic architectural ruin in the West Bank dating from the 8th century. "We're reminded again of what we all want, what every one of us prays for . . . is peace."

112. "At one point,
a boy made his way up to the first lady, and one guard momentarily pointed his gun at the boy, who ran away."

Oh, isn't THAT just lovely??!! And can you imagine the hell if they had shot the boy?

115. it was a tense situation that her handles should not have put her
in-as the quote illustrates--not only could she have been hurt but other people and kids!!

BushCo should not have put her in the Mid east at this time.

104. Protesters Mob Laura Bush in Jerusalem
This was supposed to be a "fence mending" mission. Not off to a great start.

By NEDRA PICKLER

And I have to say, this is certainly keeping in character with her Stepfordness:

"Despite the chaos at both sites, Mrs. Bush kept smiling and said little. "

105. I'm really rather un-impressed by her
I don't much care for Stepford Wives, and I think her intelligence is rather overrated too.

108. This was reckless endangerment of Laura by W
He is so totally out of touch with reality that he didn't see the protesters coming, who were both Israeli and Muslim.

Maybe he's got a new Laura in the War Room ready to go at any time.

111. Pickles note to God
My husband won't stop choking off horses, sometimes 2 at a time. Jeff Gannon leers at me in the WH hallways. Why don't I ever get flowers from George? Do I have to go to that strange place again? Those women creeped me out.

119. Now wait a minute
What she said was true. Two protesters - 1) A group of Isrealis and 2) A group of Muslims. Count 'em - one group, two groups.
