Delay Slams NBC Over Criminal Intent
Delay Slams NBC Over Criminal Intent

By John Eggerton -- Broadcasting & Cable, 5/26/2005 6:50:00 PM

House Majority leader Tom Delay fired off a letter to NBC Universal Television Group President Jeffrey Zucker Thursday calling "a failure of stewardship of our public airwaves," and a "brazen lack of judgment" a shot taken at him during NBC's Law & Order: Criminal Intent finale May 25.

According to a transcript exerpt supplied B&C by Delay's office, the show's finale features a white supremacist who kills a judge's family, and the killing of an appellate judge. As the detectives hunt for the judge killer, one says: "Maybe we should put out an APB for somebody in a Tom DeLay T-Shirt."

I liked the shirt and so I clicked over to cafepress. And clicked around the site a bit. Then clicked on one other DeLay bashing design and it was nostamj's site!

http://www.cafepress.com/nostamj

How I wish I could buy something from you, nostamj. We really miss you here.

Anyone want to interpret the DU energy behind this happening? It certainly seems to me to be a very strange 'coincidence.' And, no, I don't believe in coincidence. Guess Jeff just wanted to be remembered over here tonight. Maybe he's celebrating the Bolton vote.

96. I love Richard Belzer
Sharper, more intelligent, more informed and more aware than most of our elected officials. He seems like a great guy with a good sense of humor to boot!

And he's the only reason I even started watching the SVU show, though I now love the other cast members as well (they work really well together- if they're not friends IRL, you'd never know it). At this point I think it's probably the best of all the Law & Order incarnations, since the original is lost in my opinion so long as that jackass is playing the DA.

49. "The time will come..."
Gee, maybe their thinly-veiled threats against judges are biting them back....

Washington Post:

...House Majority Leader Tom DeLay's comments last week following the death of a brain-damaged Florida woman, Terri Schiavo. DeLay (R-Tex.) rebuked federal and state judges who had ruled in the Schiavo case, saying, "The time will come for the men responsible for this to answer for their behavior."

{Then, his Texas colleage followed up the remarks:}

In a Senate floor speech in which he sharply criticized a recent Supreme Court ruling on the death penalty, {John} Cornyn (R-Tex.) -- a former Texas Supreme Court justice and member of the Judiciary Committee -- said Americans are growing increasingly frustrated by what he describes as activist jurists.

"It causes a lot of people, including me, great distress to see judges use the authority that they have been given to make raw political or ideological decisions," he said. Sometimes, he said, "the Supreme Court has taken on this role as a policymaker rather than an enforcer of political decisions made by elected representatives of the people."

Cornyn continued: "I don't know if there is a cause-and-effect connection, but we have seen some recent episodes of courthouse violence in this country. . . . And I wonder whether there may be some connection between the perception in some quarters, on some occasions, where judges are making political decisions yet are unaccountable to the public, that it builds up and builds up and builds up to the point where some people engage in, engage in violence. Certainly without any justification, but a concern that I have." Cornyn, who spoke in a nearly empty chamber, did not specify cases of violence against judges.

DeLay:

"I can only assume last night's slur was in response to comments I have made in the past........When a responsible journalist like Brit Hume made an inquiry into such comments, he quickly understood them to be limited to Congress's oversight responsibilities and nothing more."

Well, that should settle it for everyone. When you've got a relentless gumshoe like Hume on the prowl with his crack investigative journalism talents, what more do we need?

Mr. DeWorstLayIEverHad is real fast to mouth off about judges and make implicit threats to the judiciary, but one small - and deadly accurate - topical observation in a TV drama - it's FICTION, asshole - gets him all wronged and whining and righteous.

Public figure, Tom - that's what you are. That's what you wanted. Now, eat it.

44. Delay Slams NBC Over Criminal Intent
Well, now isn't the bug exterminator a public figure? Doesn't that mean that he can be ridiculed in any public forum? I'm really surprised that he is aware that his rantings since the Schiavo case were so out of line that he's being referred to on a national TV show. Then again, I doubt many of his followers watch a show as intelligent as any of the the "Law and Order" shows. So he really has nothing to worry about. They're too busy watching "King of the Hill."

85. King of the Hill is a great show
It's probably my favorite current TV show. King of the Hill is smart and funny. It perplexes me how often I see it slammed on this board.

I don't like any of the Law & Order shows because I believe they promote a culture of fear which makes it easier for people to be controlled. (There is a large body of research on the issue of violent television programming, like cop shows, creating such a mindset in viewers. It was pioneered by a man named George Gerbner and it's called "Culitivation Theory.")

That said, I say "Bravo!" to NBC for the Delay slam!

And hey Tom you dipwad: Just because the only amendment you honor is the 2nd, doesn't mean the others don't count. They are all equal to the other in importance. And freedom of speech comes FIRST in the Bill of Rights. You want to go by order of ratification, okay, freedom of speech would still be FIRST. So get over it. 63. Inartful - the new word
"I have explained all such comments - even those inartfully made and taken out of context - on numerous occasions, including with representatives of your network."

I keep running the spell check and it keeps telling me that "inartfully" is not a word in the English language.

So, I've taken the liberty of authoring the definition:

in·art·ful (ĭn-ärt'fəl) pronunciation
adj.

1. Not lawful; illegal.
2. Contrary to accepted morality or convention; illicit.
3. Of, relating to, or being a child or children born to unmarried parents.

I base this on the origin of the word, as it was invented to describe the following comment by Delay:

After the passing of Terry Schiavo in spite of the unprecedented intervention of Congress and the Administration into a local controversy over marriage rights, Delay released the following statement:

http://releases.usnewswire.com/GetRelease.asp?id=45102

"Mrs. Schiavo's death is a moral poverty and a legal tragedy. This loss happened because our legal system did not protect the people who need protection most, and that will change. The time will come for the men responsible for this to answer for their behavior, but not today. Today we grieve, we pray, and we hope to God this fate never befalls another. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Schindlers and with Terri Schiavo's friends in this time of deep sorrow."

And, of course, the law that was allegedly broken:

Federal criminal statute, 18 U.S.C. §115 (a)(1)(B).

“Whoever threatens to assault…. or murder, a United States judge… with intent to retaliate against such… judge…. on account of the performance of official duties, shall be punished

This possible violation was addressed by Senator Lautenberg:

http://rawstory.com/exclusives/byrne/lautenberg_letter_delay_schiavo_401.htm

Delay's belated apology referred to his "inartful" remarks.

At a news conference yesterday, DeLay said those comments were made in an "inartful way," adding, "I shouldn't have said it that way, and I apologize for saying it that way." DeLay also expressed regret for failing to "explain it or clarify my remarks." He tried to explain ... his remarks by noting he was "passionate, particularly the moment and the day that Terri Schiavo was starved to death."

Notice that Delay never denies he means to take retribution against the persons responsible.

http://www.americanprogressaction.org/site/pp.asp?c=klLWJcP7H&b=508533

Before apologizing, Delay spent two weeks saying things like:

DeLay's spokesman, Dan Allen, said that "bjective observers know that Majority Leader DeLay was once again expressing his disappointment in how the courts clearly ignored the intent of the legislation that was passed. To suggest otherwise is simply obscene."

and

...six days after his initial remarks, DeLay responded to Lautenberg and refused to back down, instead taking the opportunity to attack Lautenberg. DeLay said that any criticism of his remarks "reveals either ignorance or contempt for the framework of checks and balances that make our constitutional republic possible." DeLay added that "nothing in my statement was threatening, irresponsible, dangerous, inappropriate, intimidating, or reckless.… No sincere interpretation of my statement could lead a reader to any other conclusion."

Now, according to my Constitutional knowledge, the House of Representatives has no oversight over the judicial branch. That means that a comment such as "The time will come for the men responsible for this to answer for their behavior" can not refer to lawful proceedings that Mr. Delay may direct. Therefore, "Whoever threatens to assault…" is a plausible argument for an indictment. Denials are after the fact.

--

As for the unwed parents meaning, here's a sample sentence:

As the adopted daughter of Rachel, who's father abondonded her before birth, the inartful child Ann had no hope of salvation.

fainted on set a few months ago because he was so stressed out about Bush *winning* the election. He has a lot of say, so I would not be surprised if this slam on Delay was his idea.

Last week's episode was based on Bernard Kerik, down to the three mistresses and the condo overlooking Ground Zero. Well, except for the part where he murdered someone. Anyway, this is not the first time the show has ripped on this administration, but it was definitely the most obvious. It's a great show and you should catch it if you get a chance.

The Constitutionally protected right that allows you -- a Congressman -- to publicly egg on the rabid self-Righteous against "activist judges" without being thrown in jail for inciting violence, also allows NBC to air a FICTION drama that calls you on your bad judgement.

Besides, Criminal Intent did it with far more class than you deserve.

92. DeLay Fumes At 'Law & Order' Quip
May 27, 2005

(CBS/AP) House Majority leader Tom Delay fired off a letter to NBC Universal Television Group President Jeffrey Zucker Thursday calling "a failure of stewardship of our public airwaves," and a "brazen lack of judgment" a shot taken at him during NBC's "Law & Order: Criminal Intent" season finale May 25.

According to a transcript excerpt supplied to the magazine Broadcasting & Cable by Delay's office, the show's finale features a white supremacist who kills a judge's family, and the killing of an appellate judge. As the detectives hunt for the judge killer, Detective Alex Eames, played by Kathryn Erbe, said "Maybe we should put out an APB for somebody in a Tom DeLay T-Shirt."
House Majority Leader Tom DeLay accused NBC of "a failure of stewardship of our public airwaves." (Photo: AP)

"To compare such concerns, which, again, are shared by millions of Americans, to a violent crime is a reckless trivialization of a serious public issue."
House Majority Leader Tom Delay

116. The best line from another article...
This was from another article, which had the same as the first one (no DeLay letter).

"Creator/executive producer Dick Wolf added: "But I do congratulate Congressman DeLay for switching the spotlight from his own problems to an episode of a television show."

Now, THAT is funny!

139. OMG! This is such good news..
because as I said in an earlier post..I had read that Dick Wolf was suppose to be the more conservative and the CSIs were the Liberal shows.

Well, that seems to be all changed!:D

It Is Funny! The recons..always trying to deflect their own criminal activity on to someone or something else.

141. It hasn't necessarily changed at all. L&O doesn't have to stray
from conservative principles to go after Bushco. Bushco is not interested in law or order -- only power. All proper conservatives should be outraged by Delay, *, Rummy & the rest of the cabal.

Bugboy deserved it and he should quit whining like a little girl about it.

126. Um, Tom
Um, Tom. It's a tv show and, um, you're a public figure. Remember? You have a seat in the House of Represenatives? Anything ringing a bell there, Tommy? Remember all that foaming at the mouth you did about "activist judges" back in March? Apparently, the writers for Law & Order did. Remember next time when you're trashing people and calling them names that labels can stick to you too. You judge-hating, power-crazy, unethical bug-zapping freakshow.

127. Follow up quote from Dick Wolf
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,157850,00.html

"Law & Order" creator/executive producer Dick Wolf (search) fired back, "Up until today, it was my impression that all of our viewers understood that these shows are works of fiction . . . but I do congratulate Congressman DeLay for switching the spotlight from his own problems to an episode of a TV show."

130. Tom Delay is so arrogant and obnoxious that if he could have EVERYTHING. .
his way, he would be the judge, jury, and really shine as the executioner. Tom Delay needs to growup and pretend to be a real man.

They are saying now that his nickname is, "The Hammer." What happened to "Hot Tub Tom?" Oh, that's right, he got saved and is a good Christian by emulating the life of Christ.

I cannot even imagine anyone calling that wimpy, prissy man "The Hammer." He reminds me of Pat on SNL. If someone hadn't told me that his name was Tom, I wouldn't be too sure of his gender. He looks like a sex change halfway through to me.

I'm not saying those things above to be mean, I'm just being honest about my opinion. When I see him speaking on the news with that fake smile I almost get nauseous.

The first time I heard of Tom Delay was when he used the Dept of Homeland Security to hunt for Democratic Congressmen who disappeared to keep from a vote going to the floor in Texas for rezoning. The Dems said they had to leave if they wanted to survive; otherwise, there would be no Democratic voice in Texas. Hmmmmmmm . . .kind of sounds like America as a whole.

Tom Delay got his panties in a wad when he brought the Schiavo case to National attention. He filed a complaint with the judges and, yet again, they ruled against him. WHAT? How dare they. Do they not know they are dealing with Tom Delay? Yeah, the judges knew, but the judges also knew that per the constitution, and the way the laws were written, the Schiavo case had many decisions and they all were the same. The husband was the family that would make her final decisions for her.

Tom Delay got his position by going behind the back of a fellow Republican and rallying up others against Trent Lott and the statement he made. At that time, I did not feel that Trent Lott should not resign; however, for some reason, the whole senate turned against Lott as well as the House. Was it Cheney or Bush who felt it would be best if he resigned so the parties could move on to the peoples' business? I cannot remember, but Trent Lott was an obedient little Republican and did as he was told.

Lott's dilemma was nothing compared to Dela's. I, personally, did not think that Lott meant his statement as a racist remark. Others may disagree but we all can agree to disagree.

What got me was that Bush cut his 5-day, usual Texas weekend, flew back to Washington, and signed the legislation into law. A law that only applied to one person. Now that's new, huh? Didn't the Courts that ruled against the new law rule that it was anti-Constitutional in itself, and so there was no reason for the courts to hear the case again.

Well, Delay must have never been told no before because since then, he has attacked every judge in the U.S. His words have been threatening, to a certain extent.

Tom Delay stands there and talks about stem-cell research being the "dismemberment of a human being." Someone needs to set him down and let him watch the films I had to watch as a kid in school regarding sex education, the ovaries, the egg, the sperm, and then the very important part about the egg attaching itself (no, it's not even an embryo at this point. It is considered a zygote. A zygote that looks exactly like any other mammal's zygot. It's the DNA splitting of the cells that changes the zygot into an embryo that then must attach itself to the uterine wall. By not doing so, that is why that uterine wall comes out every month -- (cramps).

OMG don't tell Delay. He'll blame every woman who has a monthly period of menses-induced, zygotic abortions.

I could go on all day (obviously), but when I hear Tom Delay I just hope I hear the words "has been convicted."
