Field of 15 candidates will vie for mayor job (San Diego/Donna Frye)
Well, the deadline has just past and we have the set of candidates who've signed up for San Diego Mayor special election after the Dick Murphy resignation.

Hopefully, either Donna Frye wins the majority in the initial vote to avoid a runoff, or we get someone like Jerry Sanders, who sounds like he'd be a reasonable alternative, even if he's a Republican.

I think the Christo-fascists recognize this, and are already on the attack to push Sanders out of the runoff slot as noted by this portion of this article:

-------------

"Sanders is already the target of attacks, including a newsletter launched Thursday by James Hartline, who accuses San Diego's former top cop of promoting a "radical homosexual agenda."

The accusation is based in part on Sanders' use of the words "tolerance" and "diverse" in a conversation after appearing this month at the San Diego County Republican Party."

Field of 15 candidates will vie for mayor job

Hopefuls turn in signatures as fiscal outlook worsens

By Philip J. LaVelle

May 28, 2005

The field of candidates hoping to succeed Mayor Dick Murphy came into sharp focus yesterday, the close of the nominating period and a day when the city's fiscal outlook darkened after more bad news from Wall Street.

Candidates or their surrogates streamed to the City Clerk's Office downtown, armed with voter signatures and rhetoric fueled by yesterday's announcement by Fitch Ratings service that it had lowered San Diego's credit rating to just above "junk bond" status.

There is only one woman among the 15 candidates, which include a half-dozen or so whom analysts regard as contenders. For the next two months, they will compete for voters fed up with fiscal chaos and the whiff of alleged corruption at City Hall.

The remaining candidates are niche players, analysts say, whose odds are microscopic by any measure.

1. I hate to be the bearer of bad news
but living in a community next to (not in, Thank Gawd) San Diego, I can tell you that Donna Frye, while probably the best candidate, is not goint to win. She almost won (on the write in) because she was the only Democrat running against two Republicans. The Repubs split the vote... and Donna almost took it because of the split. This time, there will be no write it in... it will be Donna vs. Republican Stooge, and while Donna will do better (I expect about 45% of the vote), the Republican Stooge (whatever his name) will take the other 55% in the run off.

2. But a lot has happened since then!
Everyone here is pretty bent out of shape on what is happening with the pension board mess, amongst a lot of other things that a "corrupt" government produces. Donna has been on record over and over again to be an advocate of open government here, and therefore I think she will win over many voters, including many that might have voted for Murphy before, that she didn't have in the earlier election. Let's also not forget that she ran as a write-in, which will lose her many votes amongst those who don't keep on top of such things, but might have voted for her had she been on the ballot.

That's not to say that she's got a challenge in front of her. She does. But if there's a time that she could win this race for mayor, the time would be now, after the county here is fed up with the corruption scandals. At this time, more than in past elections, they will want a new direction with someone that they view as not likely to get us into the same trap again. Donna fits that bill well, and I think that Sanders might too, even though he wouldn't be my first choice.

The way I look at it, if the election gets down to a runoff between Frye and Sanders, I think Dems have already won a battle around here at that point. Sanders is a *lot* better than Murphy, Roberts, or any of the other Republican candidates out there. He's touting the same things that Frye is in many instances and doesn't seem to be the corruptable type. Even if he were to win, Frye would still be on the city council then too, and I think overall the city would be in better health than before.

Sanders might offer the toughest one-on-one challenge to Frye though, as a more right wing candidate than he might get more moderate voters to go over to Frye then (that had voted for Murphy before).

If Frye were to beat Sanders though, she'd have a decent mandate, along with the strong mayor initiative, to do a decent cleanup of this city. Hope it happens.
