Well, the deadline has just past and we have the set of candidates who've signed up for San Diego Mayor special election after the Dick Murphy resignation.
Hopefully, either Donna Frye wins the majority in the initial vote to avoid a runoff, or we get someone like Jerry Sanders, who sounds like he'd be a reasonable alternative, even if he's a Republican.
I think the Christo-fascists recognize this, and are already on the attack to push Sanders out of the runoff slot as noted by this portion of this article:

The field of candidates hoping to succeed Mayor Dick Murphy came into sharp focus yesterday, the close of the nominating period and a day when the city's fiscal outlook darkened after more bad news from Wall Street.
Candidates or their surrogates streamed to the City Clerk's Office downtown, armed with voter signatures and rhetoric fueled by yesterday's announcement by Fitch Ratings service that it had lowered San Diego's credit rating to just above "junk bond" status.
There is only one woman among the 15 candidates, which include a half-dozen or so whom analysts regard as contenders. For the next two months, they will compete for voters fed up with fiscal chaos and the whiff of alleged corruption at City Hall.
The remaining candidates are niche players, analysts say, whose odds are microscopic by any measure.
