Experts: Iraq withdrawal now would be bad idea

BY RICHARD WHITTLE

The Dallas Morning News

WASHINGTON - (KRT) - Americans who are telling pollsters they want U.S. troops out of Iraq could see some nasty consequences if President Bush heeded their wishes, foreign policy experts warn.

At worst, the results could include:

_A civil war in Iraq resulting in far greater bloodshed than the current conflict, though presumably without further U.S. losses.

_The transformation of western Iraq, which is dominated by Sunni Muslims, into a haven for international terrorists from al-Qaida and other groups.

_A collapse of U.S. credibility among nations of the Middle East, whose leaders would probably distance themselves from Washington.

_A collapse of the Bush administration's push for democracy in the region.

1. Smarter Experts: "Going into Iraq was a much worse idea"
We're going to have to admit defeat eventually - why not NOW when we can save lives - ours AND theirs.

2. The experts are full of shit.
I think its fairly clear who understands this conflict and it isnt the experts. The experts sold us this war. The rational left got it right then and is getting it right now. Occupation is a crime, we owe Iraq money, we owe Iraq support, we owe Iraq an apology, but Iraq's fate must by needs be determined by the Iraqi people, tyranny is never the right answer.

Not really the experts. Didn't the experts recommend 400,000 troops instead of 140,000? That would have helped a lot when the Iraqis still liked us...

4. And some more...
..... as further proof that these people are truly fools:

"A civil war could result..." - no shit dumbass, what do you call what we have NOW. Iraqis are killing Iraqis. Isn't that the definition of civil war?

"The transformation of western Iraq into a haven for terrorist groups" - hey while you guys had your head up your asses talking about "liberation", Iraq turned into a terrorist haven. There was no Al-Quiada in Iraq until you morons invaded.

"A collapse of U.S. credibility" - you're joking, right? The U.S. HAS NO CREDIBILITY in the region, what the eff are you smoking? Our lack of credibility began the day we invaded Iraq for no good reason, and it has gone downhill since.

9. you left out "collapse of Bush admin push for democracy in region"
--that would be the whole effing point, to get the bloodthirsty war profiteer off of his crusade of invasion, occupation, plunder, and installation of U.S. puppet leaders.

that "collapse," in fact would be the best thing that could happen in the world. imagine Furious George neutered and declawed. the world's #1 terrorist rendered impotent. what a day!

5. Experts supporting Bush blackmail
Edited on Fri Jun-17-05 06:53 AM by PATRICK
Kerry had a plan for withdrawal. Any number of rational scenarios from the beginning could have extricated OR spread out the responsibility.

ALL dealing with unloosing the claws of the Bush cartel grip from Iraqi oil.

This is blackmail even though of course no voices the fact that the brick wall is Bush intransigence- which mean pouting prat boy would bluff down "withdrawal" by saying all or nothing.

These are "experts" in keeping the booty and nothing else. And they are certainly more expert in covering Bush butt than suddenly making the illegal US occupation a competent enterprise.

Allowing the frame of this issue to be precipitate withdrawal OR totally the same US occupation is not recognizing this is a hostage situation. The Bush team is holding Iraq hostage and threatening harm if it does not get its way.

They are holding a lot of people(some to stupid or scared to think about it) .... hostage.

Typical Bush, playing its own crimes and disasters against its victims.

Typical gangster.

(On edit). A Dallas newspaper? Really, are they getting THAT isolated?

10. This must have been written by descendants of the group that.....
...gave the exact same advice during the Vietnam War.

Just substitute the words "Vietnam" for "Iraq", "Indo-China" for the "Middle East", and "LBJ/Nixon" for "Bush", and you'll have the same advice that was given 40 years ago.

Newsflash for the "experts":

1. If Saddam had been left in place, an Iraqi Civil War may have broken out sometime in the future anyway;

2. Iraq wasn't an haven for terrorists BEFORE our illegal invasion, why would the Sunnis allow foreigners from any country establish a foothold after we left?

3. The US has no credibility now...anywhere!!

4. I would hope that it would lead to a COMPLETE collapse of the NeoCon Junta and the imprisonment of each and every on of the bastards that got us into this terrible mess.

14. Reality check - bushco created a D*mned if we do/don't scenario
and like his entire career he expects someone else to clean up after him and pay his debts.

Frankly they are correct - awful scenario if we leave.
But it is also correct that it is an awful scenario if we stay.

And both scenarios are about civil war in Iraq, unrest in the region, and screwed up US credibility.

Edited on Fri Jun-17-05 08:52 AM by Sentinel Chicken
Whoever these experts are they may well be right. But us staying in Iraq doesn't guarantee that a civil war won't happen ever. It only delays the inevitable.

I've also got a news flash for these experts. Not just western Iraq but all of Iraq is a haven for terrorists already.

Our credibility is zero, zip, nada in the ME so nothing to worry about there.

And the Bush administration's push for democracy in the region is a total fraud.

In other words, it is one big fucking pile of shit anyway you slice it, and THAT is why the French wanted to stay out, along with most of the rest of the world.

Humpty Dumpty...and all King George's men, couldn't put Humpty together again, or as Powell said (before I suppose he sold his soul): "you break it, you bought it."

35. And that's why Poppy Bush didn't want to get into it.
Junior was warned by his Dad, Scowcroft and Powell not to get into that mess that's Iraq. I wonder if Poppy has any wise words now, or has he dumped Jr. for Mr. Bill?

Civil war in Iraq may be inevitable. I don't think that we should stay longer than it takes to write the Constitution and hold elections. I don't think that we can stave off the inevitable reaction to decades or centuries of problems among the groups of people now living in Iraq. I think that they'll have to get it out of their systems before anything constructive will really happen.

27. Accepting "defeat"??
Here's how you know these people don't know WTF they're talking about:

President Bush has vowed that there will be no premature departure of U.S. troops from Iraq. And Michael O'Hanlon, a military analyst at the Brookings Institution, said he doubts that poll results showing a rise in the number of Americans who want the troops out equal a desire to pull them out prematurely.

"I don't believe Americans have come to that opinion because that is essentially accepting defeat," he said. "The real strategic issue is, are you willing to accept defeat to get our troops home?"

What defeat are we talking about here? Isn't our role in Iraq, theoretically, basically just trying to provide security for the new government to operate in? We're not "at war" with anyone in Iraq, technically, we're just resisting the insurgents. So if we pull out, how have we been defeated? We already "accomplished" our "mission" according to Chimpy, so leaving is no defeat at all.

This just shows how these so-called experts are bought into the administration's way of thinking, and not looking at the situation objectively. They're acting as if we're in a declared war, like Vietnam, but we're not.

If we leave and the Iraqi's continue to kill themselves, at least our soldiers won't be getting killed for nothing. Stability? The middle east and especially Iraq was stable until we illegally invaded.

The time to leave is now, before another US soldier is hurt or killed.
