Quran contest destroys U.S.'s reputation, Imam says

Baldwinsville recruit's contest using Quran hinders Army's effort, officer says.

Friday, June 17, 2005
By Pam Greene
Staff writer

Alvarez, a staunch Republican from Baldwinsville who enlisted in the Army Reserve in April, has gained notoriety for political antics that include hanging a statue depicting the likeness of filmmaker Michael Moore from a noose and accusing those who speak against the military of treason.

Maj. Jeff Wildeboer, operating officer with the Army Reserve 403rd Civil Affairs Battalion in Mattydale, said Thursday he plans to alert commanding officers to Alvarez's latest campaign: a contest called "Create A Pig With The Koran."

On his Web site, www.pabaah.com, Alvarez invites people to create a papier-mache pig using pages of the Quran. Links show how to get a free copy of the Quran and how to make papier-mache.

4. Hey, at least he enlisted.
Good for him. Maybe they'll send him over there right away. There are probably a lot of fundamentalist Muslims in Iraq that would be very interested in this little project of his.

5. He used to post at a board i belonged to, he was also the admin
of a site that targeted liberals and called for boycotts of movies. He urged everyone to boycott LOTR 2 but he himself admitted he would see it cuz he needed to find out what happened in the second installment. He is a fucking idiot.

Edited on Fri Jun-17-05 01:20 PM by sleipnir
I'm completely befuddled how that film could get labeled anti-American. This guy is completely nuts.

"Death to Smoochy"???!!! WTF is he smoking? He couldn't have found two actual controversial films?

I can't find the link to your thread yesterday here, but you found it and sent it to the proper sources. Good job! That guy is a lunatic and he is putting the lives of our troops in danger with his stunts. I think his "celebrity" status around here has been severely damaged (as it should be) and he is FINALLY being seen as the extremist nutjob that he is. One of my favorites was his screaming through a bullhorn and protesting the Peace Councils reading of the names of the Iraqi war dead a REAL class act I tell ya. Once again, Great work NNguyenMD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

make a papier-mache fetus to annoy the abortion clinic protesters, would there be any outrage from DU, or just "believers"?

24. My point is simple, and, I thought, reasonably self-evident.
One can produce an object that is offensive to a religious group. One can be applauded for daring to speak out, and even government funding for the production or display of the offensive thing defended. The buzz terms are "free speech, freedom of expression, no right to not be offended." Without evidence pro or con, the object's target is taken to be the most repressive representatives of the belief system under consideration, while more enlightened representatives are considered to be spared criticism. Dissent is derided as being fascist, theocratic, inimicable to a free society.

Or one can be derided for producing an object that is offensive to a religious group. Opprobrium should heaped upon the person and not only should government funding not be forthcoming for displaying it, the object should be restricted from being displayed, if not destroyed. Without evidence pro or con, object's target is taken to be the most enlightened representatives of the belief system under consideration, while more repressive streams of thought are considered to be beside the point. It's "hate speech, offensive, fascist, intimidating". Dissent is derided as being fascist, theocratic, inimicable to a free society.

If a clear, principled distinction can be made between the two approaches, I can respect it. But I haven't seen a principled distinction. I continue to wait.

I didn't like "Piss Christ" or other works that I didn't view as art, but supported the right of the people to produce such things. I don't like this guy's project, but still support his right to produce such things. I don't draw a distinction based on the object of the ridicule: if Maplethorpe had the right to offend Xians while at the government feeding trough, this jerk certainly has the right to offend Muslims on his own time and dime.

sounds gross. I guess you're free to do as ya please in the privacy of your home, but making a spectacle out of it is another. These comments cement my belief that there are just as many morans on the left side of the spectrum.

Not a bit hard to spot. It's a matter of quality. They're vulgar, bitter, hate-filled, and slow.

15. Defamation? Because I took a book that I paid for and used it to wipe my
ass? Who am I defaming? It is a printed page....nothing greater or less.

If someone wants to revere it, fine. Don't ask me to.

As for the ADL, they run their house and I run mine. Maybe I'll be smoking a great big Torah wrapped joint as I am "defacing" the Koran. All the while my little big bellied Buddha is laughing away.

23. The only outrage was from "believers", with free thinkers and
dems defending Piss Christ and its funding. Oh, and deriding those who dared argue that it was offensive, and shouldn't be allowed.

Change 20 years, and change the religion, and offense goes from desirable and encouraged, an exercise of free speech, to forbidden and loathsome, subject to being banned.

It's not the goring, it's the ox.

21. Al Qaeda Is Thanking Allah For Alvarez
Zarqawi's terrorists as well as the Ba'athist and other Iraqi insurgents are doubtlessly thanking Allah for the stupidity of certain "Amurrican" individuals and the way their actions fan the hostility of Iraqis and other Muslims. How many Americans will die or be maimed because of that man's folly? How many Iraqi bystanders will suffer?

Of course the Banana Republicans and the block-headed right will blame "liberals" for pointing out the obvious.

Seriously, I used to think that the Almighty looked kindly on the US and allowed us to escape a lot of the horrors suffered by the Old World and of Latin America. Then my fellow-countrymen elected G. W. Bush and gave the Republicans majority control of the Federal government and all too many state governments.

IMHO, the US has been doing that pretty well for a while now.

Perhaps the Ummah will get equally incised over the slaughter of it's women and children.
