ACLU Says Bush Is Restricting Science

By Associated Press
Posted June 21 2005, 12:42 PM EDT

WASHINGTON -- The American Civil Liberties Union charged Tuesday that the Bush administration is placing science under siege by overzealously tightening restrictions on information, individuals and technology in the name of homeland security.

The administration "has sought to impose growing restrictions on the free flow of scientific information, unreasonable barriers on the use of scientific materials and increased monitoring of and restrictions on foreign university students," the ACLU said.

Since the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks the government has actively increased the use of classifying information to keep it secret, including the use of the category "unclassified but sensitive" and extending classification authority to more departments, the ACLU said.

Robert Hopkins of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy criticized the ACLU for seeking to politicize the issue.

1. Yet, isn't it our 'innovation' that's supposed to create new jobs here?
So maybe that innovation won't work out so well if our children get taught that the Earth is flat and nobody with a college degree is allowed to immigrate here.

Mark my words: One of these days, the Chinese are going to call in our IOUs, and we will be left shivering in the dark with nothing but a bunch of stupid Bibles to eat...

2. As far as * and the evil cabal are concerned ...
... science (morality, god...) is what "they" say it is ...it's just plain unAmerican to interrupt their tirades with the truth.

3. Yesterday the PA house had a debate over inclusion of ID in science
classes througout the state. I was appalled that we're having this disussion.

It just amazes me how far we've fallen behind in the past few years - we no longer lead the world in math and science.

7. He's cutting funding, too.
NASA is shifting funds from Earth-based science to Moon and Mars (http://www.agu.org/cgi-bin/asla/asla-list?read=2005-15.msg) and the National Science Foundation, NSF, is expecting some cuts, too (http://www.agu.org/cgi-bin/asla/asla-list?read=2005-12.msg).

To this administration, information and science are evil.

9. That even made news in a forum devoted to pc technologies.
:wow:

Information breeds innovation and freedom. Gotta keep your serfs in the dark and be unable to innovate; not without risking 'hurting' someone else.

*'s actions seem increasingly absurd. Of course, if you know society was about to shut down, you'd be pretty agitated too.
