People dying in New Orleans streets
http://news.scotsman.com/latest.cfm?id=1876802005

The people of New Orleans desperately begged for help as sick and injured disaster victims were dying on the streets.

Refugees demanded food and water as dead bodies piled up in the chaos and rescue crews were nowhere to be seen.

30. Yup. As Bush meets with cabinet officials,
he feels strangely good today. He sips some Ecuador coffee, and drinks some Perrier water as they review the situation down in N. Orleans.

"How much can they take?" Bush asks a FEMA official.

"I don't think much more, sir. The fatalities are WAY more than they initially estimated. We could see deaths over 100,000 at this rate".

"OK, send down about 50% of what they need. Then let's play the waiting game. We'll tell them it's on the way, hold on, we care about you".

Bush smiles. He knows he's getting a two-fer.

19. This is insanity. Just like NORAD on Sept. 11th.
They could have been on top of this from the very first moment the weather was detected. People were screaming about the lack of preparation the day before this happened.

But the Illegal Cheerleader is busy looting the Meddle East. So our troops and equipment are elsewhere.

This is yet another act of criminal neglect.

Step aside, Bush, Cheney, rove, and the rest of this illegal gang of thugs!

37. A car doesn't get you anywhere when you can't afford the gas.
Edited on Fri Sep-02-05 02:13 PM by calimary
And their references to "house" often reflects a shack, a crowded little apartment. "The projects." In fact, that's what I heard a lot - references to their living in "the projects." Read: SLUMS. I used to refer to "going to my house" when I myself lived in a little apartment, or even dorm room in college.

Let 'em eat cake, 'eh?

Many of them DID have a few supplies - which by now have been exhausted, BTW. And you can't very well stockpile a lot of supplies when you don't have that much money anyway, and if you live in a little place with very little room in it to store stuff, can you? OVER AND OVER I've heard people saying they wanted badly to leave but couldn't, because they couldn't afford to get out, or couldn't afford to buy gas, or maybe their cars weren't working in the first place and they couldn't afford to pay for a decent car repair job. Or some of 'em broke down on the way. Or some of 'em waited in lines on the freeways (did you happen to notice how backed-up the interstates out of town were, in the days leading up to Katrina making landfall?) so long that they ran out of gas, too.

Even well-heeled tourists at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in the French Quarter have reported that they, too, tried to leave when warned. And when they tried, they'd found that the airport had closed and there were no more flights out, so they, too, were stuck.

Yes, and many of them who KNEW they were living in a below-sea-level bowl and it was just a matter of time before this happened, had been begging and pleading with the federal government to fund the Army Corps of Engineers projects and other FEMA projects to shore up the levees that were well-documented and well-studied enough for people to recognize they might not hold through a Category-Five hurricane. For YEARS some of these people were begging and pleading. In vain.

Welcome to DU, and please don't be so eager to blame or to judge. I live in earthquake country. It is common knowledge here that you need enough life-sustaining supplies to last you three days without help. COMMON KNOWLEDGE. But for these people, three days are already long gone. It's been longer than that - that they've gone without help. If they HAD laid in survival supplies for three days, those supplies would be used up by now.

41. Do a little reading before making such judgments
Most of the inner city residents who are poor DID NOT have the means to leave, NO provision was made to help those POOR people who did want to leave, and many if not MOST people who are poor - including the working poor - do not have enough money to put in three days supply of food, etc. by the end of the month.

People who are poor are also understandably reluctant to leave possessions which they will not have the means to replace if they think the odds are that they can ride it out and protect their homes. Like many not so poor who feel the same for whom replacing possessions would be less of a hardship, for that matter.

WHY was no help to evacuate offered to those who wanted to leave but lacked the means to do so themselves????

And WHY, knowing so many would stay, were emergency plans not made for immediate LARGE SCALE Disaster Relief???

Look at the Poverty level in the City of NO, look at the % Minority population, and then look at who was left behind with no provision for their care in the wake of a disaster. And what good does blaming the victim do anyway?

But the vast majority of NO's citizens aren't involved--even though you would no doubt consider them of a lower socioeconomic group than you.
