Blair falls into line with Bush view on global warming
Blair falls into line with Bush view on global warming

By Geoffrey Lean and Christopher Silvester

Published: 25 September 2005

Tony Blair has admitted that he is changing his views on combating global warming to mirror those of President Bush - and oppose negotiating international treaties such as the Kyoto Protocol.

His admission, which has outraged environmentalists on both sides of the Atlantic, flies in the face of his promises made in the past two years and undermines the agreement he masterminded at this summer's Gleneagles Summit. And it endangers talks that opened in Ottawa this weekend on a new treaty to combat climate change.

The U-turn will inevitably bring accusations that he has, once again, sold out to Mr Bush, just at the time that the US President is coming under unprecedented pressure to change his policy in the wake of hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Last week the UK Government's chief scientific advisor, Sir David King, said that global warming might have increased their severity.

<snip>

Last night, Tony Juniper, executive director of Friends of the Earth, called the Prime Minister's volte-face "unbelievable": "Having failed to practise what he preaches, he is now changing his preaching to match his practice.

20. Uh-Oh. The Queen is gonna be pissed.
She summoned him some while back as she noticed Balmoral was getting a wee bit cold. Worse, her observations of flora and fauna concerned her. For a few minutes he perfunctorily mouthed some opposition to *dauphin and his merry band of demolition men but I guess Carlyle sweetened his golden parachute...

4. As I said before, the Carlyle Group does Blair's thinking these days.
The fact that George H.W. Bush was working for them while his son was president, while his son, in fact, was dramatically increasing defense spending—that seems to me one of the most blatant conflicts of interests in history

19. How much power does the British PM wield?
Can Parliament simply go around him or does he have totalitarian powers like our president has? Where does Parliament stand on this shift towards the right on the part of their PM? Are they kicking up a fuss over his leading them into an illegal war and now down the path to apocalyptic global warming, or are they like our Congress and just roll over for the executive branch?

39. The prime concern of Labour MPs is getting re-elected
and, after that, promoted in the Labour hierarchy. Since Blair has said he's going to stand down some time before the next election, there's not so much pressure on him, since they know they won't have to make excuses for him next time. So most of them are keeping their heads on, not rocking the boat, and waiting to see how Gordon Brown turns out. Yes, they roll over to have their tummy tickled.

8. give them the evil eye ;-)
He dared go against Bush at the Gleneagles Summit, and look what happened to the London Underground the day the summit opened. It was so convenient for Bush, how the focus of that summit immediately turned to terrorism.

After that spanking, and no doubt a few carrots, little Tony has learnt to behave.

9. This article doesn't give enough information to criticize.
The quotes from the Rice thing are disjointed.

I've heard Blair say that when the most powerful economy in the world won't play by the rules, it makes it very hard for everyone else to play by the rules and that they need new strategies to achieve the same ends.

It's not clear from these quotes that that (sensible) position is inconsistent with his most recent statements.

11. Blair is accused of Kyoto U-turn
PM moves closer to Bush's solutions

Juliette Jowit, environment editor
Sunday September 25, 2005
The Observer

Tony Blair was accused last night of backing down on the Kyoto agreement to tackle climate change after he confessed to 'changing my thinking about this'.

In comments earlier this month which have only just emerged, the Prime Minister talked about a 'post-Kyoto' era, appearing to predict the death of the multi-lateral treaty. A total of 156 nations have signed it, but the US, the world's biggest polluter, has refused to do so. <snip>

Instead, he talked enthusiastically about focusing on technology-led solutions, the process favoured by America, Japan, China and India, but rejected by environmental campaigners and other leaders, including Britain's own minister responsible for climate change minister.

He also back-tracked on his previous insistence that tackling climate change would not damage economic growth, warning 'no country is going to cut its growth or consumption substantially' - a phrase that echoes anti-Kyoto arguments of President George Bush. <snip>

12. Blair signals he’s cooling towards Kyoto
Jonathan Leake, Environment Editor

TONY BLAIR has hinted Britain may pull out of attempts to draw up a successor to the Kyoto climate treaty because the economic price of cutting greenhouse gas emissions is too high.

The prime minister told an international meeting in New York he was “changing (his) thinking about this”.

“We have got to start from the brutal honesty about the politics of how we deal with it,” he said. “The truth is no country is going to cut its growth or consumption substantially in the light of a long-term environmental problem. To be honest, I don’t think people are going, at least in the short term, to start negotiating another major treaty like Kyoto.”

Blair’s words will undermine the efforts of Margaret Beckett, his environment secretary, who is drawing up plans for just such a new treaty. She is due to fly to Montreal in November to begin talks on the treaty, to take effect when the Kyoto accord ends in 2012. <snip>

21. Are Blair and Bush really human beings? How,after Katrina,Rita and the
other hurricanes we have already had and only half way through the season. can he say that?

How,despite scientific studies that show the oceans rising, glaciers melting can they believe that?

How can either of them look in the mirror to see a reflection of a souless, heartless piece of shit and not want to hurl blood?

Do they not care for the future of their children and grandchildren?

How the hell much money does a person need anyway?

BLAIR FALLS INTO LINE WITH BUSH VIEW ON GLOBAL WARMING

By Geoffrey Lean and Christopher Silvester

Over the past two years Mr Blair has consistently claimed global leadership in tackling what he described as "long term, the single most important issue we face as a global community" and has stressed that it "can only properly be addressed through international agreements". President Bush repeatedly expressed anger at his position.

Sharing a platform with the US Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice, in New York this month, Mr Blair confessed: "Probably I'm changing my thinking about this", adding that he hoped the world's nations would "not negotiate international treaties".

Although he was already finished politically he could have maintained one scrap of dignity by holding fast to the one issue on which he maintained some modicum of credibility. Now he rejects his own science advisor because baby doc Junior "gets angry" at his postion. :puke: :puke: :puke: This final gutter craven reversal must be the price of his admission to the Carlyle Group when he is bounced from the leadership of his party as he should be for this final career ending momentous idiocy.
