Federal dollars for subway security declines, Schumer says



New York's share of federal money for mass transit security has declined during the past three years, even as the threat to city subways remains ever high, according to figures provided by Sen. Charles Schumer.

Two years ago, money for the region accounted for nearly 50 percent of the national share, according to the data. This year, that figure has declined to just over 25 percent.

Schumer's report, delivered at a news conference at the Union Square subway station, came on the very day that intelligence reports had indicated terrorists might have planned to bomb New York's trains.

Those reports, which some federal officials dispute, prompted Mayor Michael Bloomberg to intensify patrols and searches on trains and buses. Police officials have said that the heightened alert was to continue indefinitely.
