SA-trained troops lead coup in São Tomé
An elite unit of South African-trained soldiers led the assault on the São Toméan presidency and have effectively taken control of the government, according to a senior São Toméan official.

A group of soldiers seized power on Wednesday morning, when the country's president, Fradique de Meneses, was on a private visit to Nigeria. The soldiers locked up Prime Minister Maria das Neves and several other ministers, dissolved parliament and grabbed control of the radio and television stations.

The coup leader, Major Fernando Pereira, was head of the Military Training Centre but has now promoted himself to commander of the armed forces.

And who trained the SA troops? The CIA?

4. So you're suggesting South Africa is a CIA front now ?
We may have just seen a dress rehearsal for the resolution of the Zimbabwe mess.

5. Oil and US Naval base.
from VOA -The government recently asked the United States to establish a naval base in the islands to protect growing American oil interests in west Africa.

Sao Tome hopes to begin receiving oil money in 2004, as bidding has already started on drilling licenses for nine offshore oil blocks it jointly holds with Nigeria. Analysts believe waters off Sao Tome have substantial offshore oil reserves. [http://www.voanews.com/article.cfm?objectID=3A2C7537-F0FD-4692-87FFF735827D350B

8. not my "little equation"...it's the Smirko Regime's one-track mind.
Edited on Thu Jul-17-03 11:29 AM by I AM SPARTACUS
what's your beef with Mandela???

On edit: dwill - I see from your other posts that today alone, you've also taken swipes at Kobe Bryant, OJ Simpson, and Carol Mosely Braun. You've also advocated that the Dems back-down from holding the Smirko Regime accountable over the Iraq lies. And you needn't bother to respond to this post - not that you would, based on your M.O...

One more thing Dwill...are you sure that you didn't accidentally hit the "d" key instead of the "s" key when you were registering your name? It's understandable if you did, after all, they are so close together on the keyboard...

10. I have no beef with Nelson Mandela. South African trained
rebels staged a coup. You immediately connected it to the Bush admin.

I have never claimed to be a lemming for the Democratic or Republican party. I do my own thinking and rationalizing. If it's dumb or silly
I will point it out . People are welcome to treat me the same. It.s called debate, not a circle jerk.

11. BushCo that connected itself to Oil, Halliburton, Regime-Change...
...and a policy of Pre-emption. Unfortunate for your disjointed thought-process, I didn't make the connection, they did.

It was BushCo that connected itself to the US Gov't - it was Poppy that connected himself to the CIA (remember, he was a high-muckety-muck in the CIA...???) It was Unca Dick who connected himself to Halliburton and Unca Dick that further connected HAL to your tax-dollars.

AND...my post has nothing to do with WHERE the coup leaders trained nor with who trained them. So...you're saying that the Smirko Regime has NO connections to OIL and HALLIBURTON...???

And please - what does oil, Halliburton, and the Smirko Regime have to do with Nelson Mandela?

12. You immediately connected rebels from South Africa (a country
not friendly to the Bush admin) to the CIA because of oil. That's just political bantering, not intellectually founded. If you had made the connection to some other countries, I might see your point.

13. you are deluded, you cannot read properly, and you confuse...
...anyone with an opinion different from your own as everyone with an opinion different from your own.

I didn't mention the CIA, South Africa, nor any other country in Africa. I drew a very simple connection between Sao Tome's oil and the misunderstimadministration's agenda.

Your strategery of bald-faced misattribution shows...

14. I can read a post as simple as this:
. Oil + Naval base = Halliburton contracts

...no fuzzy math here...

/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

All I'm saying is that it is intellectually dishonest. We can debate
the Pitfalls of the Bush presidency but flames such as this serve no purpose.

15. what's intellectually dishonest about the equation?
c'mon, show me where Halliburton:
a. doesn't profit from sweetheart US military contracts
b. doesn't profit from its oilfield service contracts
c. isn't connected to the Smirko Regime
d. doesn't impact US energy policy
e. doesn't impact US military policy

c'mon, show me where the Smirko Regime:
a. doesn't embrace a policy of pre-emption
b. doesn't use the military to secure energy resources
c. doesn't use the political hegemony to secure energy resources
d. doesn't contain insiders with profit motives for manipulating US foreign policy

"it is intellectually dishonest"...??? Please recognize that what YOU are saying is dishonest, only without the "intellectual" part...

I hear you, though...as you bah-bah-bah...and I recognize it for what it is...

16. When you can't win the arguement, change the subject, old
bbs trick.

My simple question was and is:

How did you immediately make the connection between a coup and South
African rebels to the Bush admin. It's talking point politics and
you know you can't connect it up except by spouting the same old
lingo over and over.

17. you're insulting yourself in a mirror, dwill...
I made no such connection.

Does Halliburton have contracts for US military infrastructure and support? (SAY YES HERE)

Does the Smirko Regime have an obsession with oil?(SAY YES HERE)

Has the Smirko Regime expressed a willingness to use military force to effect regime change?(SAY YES HERE)

Has the Smirko Regime expressed a sudden interest in Sao Tome after an exploration of oil resources in the nation's territorial waters? (SAY YES HERE)

Did I write that the Smirko Regime effected this coup (SAY NO HERE)

Did I write that the CIA trained the coup leaders? (SAY NO HERE)

Did I write that the coup leaders were trained anywhere? (SAY NO HERE)

Dwill - who's repeating the same old lingo???

18. hey dwill - THANKS - there's no way that this topic would have...
stayed near the top of LBN if it wasn't for your inane questions and misattributions. And in a few months, a few people here will remember that some freeper-troll tried to convince DUers that Halliburton would NOT profit from the development of Sao Tome's energy resources...

9. I don't think so...
SA has had it's own elite troops for quite some time, quite independent of the CIA.
