U.S. tells Iraq it will not tolerate prisoner abuse

http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=/2005/11/18/worldupdates/2005-11-17T215345Z_01_NOOTR_RTRJONC_0_-223987-1&sec=Worldupdates

U.S. tells Iraq it will not tolerate prisoner abuse

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - The U.S. embassy told Iraq on Thursday it would not tolerate abuse of detainees or the involvement of militias in detentions, stepping up pressure on the government following revelations of a secret prison bunker.

"We have made clear to the Iraqi government that there must not be militia or sectarian control of Iraqi security forces, facilities or ministries," senior embassy spokesman Jim Bullock told reporters in Baghdad, reading out a statement.

"We do not tolerate any abuse of detainees in Iraq. Even one case is too much anywhere ... the Iraqi government must take measures to ensure this kind of thing does not happen again."

U.S. forces this week discovered a bunker near the Interior Ministry in Baghdad where more than 170 prisoners were being held, many of them malnourished, beaten or even tortured.

Meanwhile Cheney holds secret meetings to lobby for exemptions for the US?

I doubt anything else would hold up nowdays.

11. Same here.
I had to go back and re-read that text...."the U.S. WILL NOT tolerate Iraqis doing any torture..."

OMG....this proves it. We've slipped over to the Dark Side.

I just read an article in the latest Time magazine. There was an article about Cheney and his problems. Cheney had said, "We need to be a little bit on the Dark Side". As I drove home, I couldn't get that comment out of my mind.

Haliburton. So obviously we have to protect that arrangement.

13. Its official now
They have given up on rational people and are only concerned with the die hard 30%. The statements they are making are so hypocritical that they make no sense to anyone who is aware of the facts the rest of the world is getting. The official statements are only for their delusional hardcore constituents who get all their news from Fox.

If they can hold that 30% until they come up with another issue like gay marriage to get the ill-informed to the polls, they will pull it off again.

constraint by the Geneva conventions; but acts with moral repugnance when the new Iraqi gov (the US installed) does the same?

20. I doubt that it was Dickhead Cheney who said it though. My first reaction
was to laugh. Then it dawned on me what and who I was laughing about and that really depresses me.

The criminals in Washington have made my poor country a moral and fiscal bankrupt.

23. The U.S. wants to keep a monopoly on torture.
They're very upset that their puppets are trying to muscle into their market.

By the way, why was Sen. McCain "tortured," but the Iraqis are "abused?" It's a simple propagandistic word-play. I think everyone here know this--I just wanted to reiterate it.

25. The Negroponte Connection?
It has been reliably reported in MSM that the security staff (aka "torturers") at the facility were probably members of Badr Brigade, although facility was nominally Interior Ministry.

Given that the abuses probably started awhile back, I'm wondering if Negroponte might have played a direct role in helping set it up, given his experience with death squads in the '80's.

Just a thought

26. I. Can't. Fucking. Stand. Much. More.
I just can't.

No, no, wait a minute, I'm OK now. I just remembered that the Emperor said "we don't torture." So I guess it's just peachy for us to tell them eye-rackys they can't do it.

While we're at it, let's tell them they have to have fair and honest elections, have universal healthcare, be ready to take care of their people after natural disasters, and above all, we need to tell them thay can't start wars with other countries that didn't do anything to them!!

Hey, we have the moral high ground on all that stuff, right?

27. In translation in Arabic
did they preface each sentence with "From now on, if possible" or after tolerate "if reports get out"? Or "no kidding we really mean it, we are getting a lot of flack right now." Or "you know what I mean, wink wink."

31. Since when? Worried about the competition?
Are the Iraqis doing it for free and driving the price down? Is that what the US won't tolerate?

Cause torture is as American as apple pie.
