MIKE SAKAL, Morning Journal Writer11/27/2005

A whirlwind year is in store for U.S. Rep. Sherrod Brown, D-Avon, as he kicks off his campaign for one of Ohio's U.S. Senate seats.

Brown, an outspoken critic of President Bush's policies on the war in Iraq and a vociferous voice against the outsourcing of American manufacturing jobs and the high cost of prescription drugs, will begin his drive to the U.S. Senate on Friday, Brown confirmed.

Brown will kick off his campaign with a press conference at 1:30 p.m. in the State Senate's Minority Room at the Statehouse in Columbus in his run to become Ohio's first Democratic U.S. senator since John Glenn retired in 1998...

''I'm ready for this race,'' Brown said. ''I plan to campaign on the failure of the Bush-Taft-Dewine team, on how they failed Ohio in education funding, on jobs, the high cost of energy and prescription drugs. I'm going to go through every part of the state and I'll also talk about what I plan to do. I have ideas, and I plan to talk about them.''...

Congressman will travel across state, stop at UA in bid for DeWine's seat

...In the May primary, he'll face Cincinnati attorney and Iraq War veteran Paul Hackett, who narrowly lost a bid last summer to fill the vacant seat in the 2nd Congressional District...

He said he was excited for the chance to start meeting voters face to face. ``My focus is on building a Democratic base and pointing out the failure of (Gov. Bob) Taft, (President) Bush and DeWine,'' Brown said.

He counts among those failures, education, health care and jobs...

Brown said he's not planning on an ugly campaign with Hackett, and believes he will carry most of the Democratic endorsements from county party chairs, through labor and environmental groups...

House Democrat hopes to challenge DeWine after facing Paul Hackett in primary

Fifteen years after a defeat that contributed to the Republican takeover of state government, Democrat Sherrod Brown is ready to make another try for statewide elective office.

"I've been fighting clearly on the right side of issues ... on bringing down the cost of prescription drugs, on getting us out of Iraq honorably and quickly and in an orderly fashion, on health care issues, jobs and trade," Brown said in a telephone interview last week...

In 1990, Brown lost a bid for re-election to a third term as Secretary of State to Republican Bob Taft, now Ohio governor. Brown's loss and Republican George Voinovich's defeat of Democrat Anthony J. Celebrezze in that year's governor's race put Republicans in two statewide offices that Democrats had held for eight years.

The victories also gave Republicans control of the State Apportionment Board, which draws state legislative districts. Republicans already controlled the Ohio Senate and in 1994 gained control of the Ohio House as well. They remain in control of both and also hold all statewide non-judicial offices...

This Is the Race-
A candidate whose record demands progressives’ support

By David Sirota

As anyone who’s spent time working on Capitol Hill knows, Washington, D.C., is really just an elaborate pressure system designed to turn corporate money and conservative conventional wisdom into congressional votes. With nearly every bill, there is a disconnect between what lawmakers tell the public they are doing and what they are actually doing and why.

In such a corrupt system, it seems nearly impossible to fight for the progressive agenda while ascending the power structure. The standard narrative says stay pure and be marginalized, or sell out the public and rise. But there are rare leaders who break this stereotype. One of them is Sherrod Brown.

A congressman from the Cleveland suburbs, Brown has both the fiery tenacity of history’s progressive champions and the seasoned political skills necessary to forge a different path to prominence. Over the years, he has defied the axiom that legislators who confront Washington’s corrupt pressure system don’t live to tell the tale. In fact, Brown has flourished.

On nearly every major issue, Brown has held the torch for progressives, even in the dark, lonely days when there was neither a blogosphere or infrastructure designed to support and promote progressive champions...

4 Democrats may join race for Brown's 13th District seat

...So far, at least four Democrats are seeking the 13th Congres sional District seat or consider ing it.

Tom Sawyer, former Akron mayor and 16-year congressman, said "I'm in it" during a recent interview. Sawyer said that whoever wins the Democratic primary will be the new congressional representative.

Former State Rep. Wayne Jones, chairman of the Summit County Board of Elections, is another Democrat strongly considering a run for the seat. He said Sawyer's entry into the race would not affect his decision.

Capri Cafaro of Youngstown, the wealthy daughter of a mall developer, is another possibility. Spokesman Vic Rubenstein said, "She is actively being encouraged, she is actively considering it, and she is actively talking about it."...

1. Paul Hackett is the one who opened this state up for challenge
he is the one who deserves to be Senator

For Brown it was an after-thought, only when Hackett showed he could win did Brown decide to run

I will see what happens with Alito, and 2006, but the DNC will NOT get another dime from me. Individual candidate yes, but NOT the democrats as a whole. The party no longer represents me as a whole

I will be donating to Paul Hackett

2. Me too.
Hackett did the heavy lifting, and if you want to watch a Democratic party lifer go down in flames just like Fernando Ferrer in New York, by all means nominate Sherrod Brown.

4. Hackett is not a liberal
Brown has a proven record standing with the working men and women of Ohio against the rightwing onslaught.

It is no mere coincidence that most of our Ohio friends prefer Brown over Hackett.

Hackett should run against that nazi bitch Schmidt!

15. Brown is my rep
I do have to say that Sherrod Brown has always been open to me. Whenever I see him, I always throw questions at him and he's always ready to fire back.

For example, he voted against the Medicare bill with the prescription coverage. I saw him here in Brunswick and I yelled out at him how he could vote against a prescription care coverage for seniors? He came right back with it is a bill for the big drug companies. I thought he was on the wrong side but he's been proven right.

Even though Hackett is a good man and a marine vet, I have to vote to for Sherrod and give him some money.

I think Hackett should re-run for the Mean Jean's seat.

11. If you have been listening to what he has been saying
for the last dozen years while serving in the house.....

So he didn't call Bush an SOB... Oh well...

But, He has always, always put the working men of Ohio and the United States over the interests of the corporate giants... He is a progressive in the truest sense, he is trying to make the world a better place...

13. I saw Sherrod Brown at a meeting of progressives in L.A. a few weeks ago
and was really impressed with him. I admit I was initially peeved with his decision - or seeming indecision - about running, which apparently caused Hackett to enter the race. So I wanted to ask him a question about that during the meeting. It was a screening of the new Wal_mart movie. But really he impressed me enough with his knowledge about human rights abuses in Central America (perpetuated by Wal-Mart et al.) and, hell, just the fact that he was there in Los Angeles of all places for the screening of this movie, rubbing elbows with young, grassroots progressives, that I figured what the hell, what's the point of being divisive.

Paul Hackett is great - I can't wait to see him in another post.
