White House on jobless figures: "The economy is cooking along"

WHITE HOUSE The White House says today's jobless figures show America's in a "sustained economic expansion."

The Labor Department reports the economy produced a net gain of 215-thousand jobs last month. That's the biggest jump since July, even though the unemployment rate held steady at five percent.

Press Secretary Scott McClellan says it's clear "the economy is cooking along."

President Bush has summoned reporters to the Rose Garden so he can hail the latest numbers.

No, more like this nazi administration is cooking the books. Jobs paying a living wage/decent bennies are extremely hard to come by.

13. By cooking along Puffy McMoonFace actually means....
That higher wage jobs have been replaced by low wage positions like short order cooks and other fast food jobs.

Never trust these numbers as they're most definitely lower wage jobs that people have gotten after being kicked out of higher wage positions

16. Increase in Production of what???
Please someone, anyone, explain what Georgie or any of these economic whores mean when they say there has been a significant increase in production.

To have a production, don't you have to be producing something or are they including the hamburgers being flipped at MacDonalds?

17. 5% Unemployment
How many times do I still have to hear that today's unemployment rate is the average of the 70's, 80's, and 90's. So friggin' what? It's still higher today than it was the day that President Clinton left office.

18. I don't believe it's only 5%....
I wonder what the true stat of unemployed is, because the way they count it does not include people once their unemployment payments have run out, even if they have not found work yet. It also does not count all the people that are too "proud" to apply for an unemployment check, and I know several people like that too. It does not include the self employed that lose their jobs. Wonder what the "real" numbers are?

Oh, and BTW, welcome to DU!!!

23. I figure 2x the statistic given is closer
the actual rate is probably around 10% if all unemployed were actually counted. This doesn't include the underemployed or the self-employed who would rather have full-time jobs. If one adds those in we are probably closer to a 12-15% unemployment rate.

And that does not count folks like me who are quitting their job to be caretakers of someone on disability. Technically, I will be "unemployed" after Dec. 16.

19. This is only the 10th time in 5 years that
ChimpGimp's maladministration has been above the job churn (i.e. new workers going in, old workers going out, a figure of about 150 thousand jobs to break even). That's not exactly something I'd be proud of if I were Snotty McClellan.

22. "Cooking?" ...as in "Fried?"
No one counts the many whose Unemployment benefits long-since expired. Nor do they count temps (which comprise a larger and larger part of the workforce), and homeless who've given up entirely on looking at all.

Part-time (no Benefit) Holiday help...like Summer/Vacation help...gives that twice-a-year "bump" that grossly overplays the true crisis this country and economy is in.

24. bush knew
Bush knew that 11 soldiers were killed in Iraq before he went into the rose garden to give some good news on the economy Friday morning. As you will recall he did not mention it. 26 minutes later after his speech the news broke to the press. McCellan said bush knew before he gave the speech....
