After meeting with Bush, Lieberman affirms Iraq-war support
(Hartford-AP, Dec. 16, 2005 11:33 AM) _ After meeting with President Bush this morning, Senator Joe Lieberman reaffirmed his support for the Iraq war, saying the president's recent speeches do indeed add up to a "plan for success."

Lieberman's remarks were broadcast from a mid-morning press conference with other senators in front of the White House. Bush and the senators discussed yesterday's Iraqi elections.

Lieberman says the nation is in Iraq to protect the rights of 26 million people to "a better life" against 10,000 to 15,000 terrorists.

7. He claims to be so damn religious, he needs to read those
tablets that old Moses brought down the hill. What part of THOU SHALT NOT KILL does he fail to comprehend? It doesn't do ya any good to get some goy to turn your lights on and off for you one day a week if you don't walk the walk the other six days.

11. This is strictly a religious, not a political comment
The sixth commandment says, "Lo tirzach," which does not translate to, "Thou shalt not kill." Like it or not, the Hebrew Bible condones, indeed, requires, killing under certain circumstances.

I realize there is a certain political inference to be drawn from this. :eyes:

16. I don't speak the language, so I am NO expert!
What does it mean, then? Could it be that the fundies have gotten it wrong all these years? I seriously would like to know how the phrase suffered in translation; simply for my own edification, plus it would make an iteresting discussion point (we learn something new everyday...or should, I guess!).

It would be rather ironic if the stock character, cud-chewing, unshaven dirty clown in every bad movie we have ever seen who says something along the lines of "He needs killin'!!!" has his roots in the far-away deserts!!!

33. The translation of "Lo tirzach"
would be "You shall not murder," or "You shall not kill unlawfully." The prohibition is not against killing per se. The Hebrew Bible sanctions, indeed it demands, capital punishment, likewise in contemplates killing in warfare. I should hasten to add that the rabbinic texts (the Talmud) place qualifications and heavy impediments on the actual imposition of a death penalty.

34. Hmmm, would that apply to nations as well as individuals?
Because we are certainly shamed by the way the Monkeyking has sent our children off to do dispicable things--there has certainly been an aura of unlawful murder about, in some circumstances--and they have no option but to obey the commander in chief...and JoeMentum still hopes to be SECDEF, in order to do more of the same!!

If it does apply to nation-states, he's still in trouble with the Rabbi!

"Lieberman says the nation is in Iraq to protect the rights of 26 million people to "a better life" against 10,000 to 15,000 terrorists."

And just who is 'protecting' millions of Americans from the Neo-con terrorists currently ruining our economy, our democracy, and the American way of life?

Americans need "a better life" than the one they're getting under this Administration. Where does the Loserman stand on that issue?

38. Lieberman says Bush turned corner on Iraq
WASHINGTON -- Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman, whose vocal pro-war support for President Bush has rankled fellow Democrats, emerged from a White House meeting Friday saying the president has turned the corner on Iraq in recent weeks.

Lieberman cited the substantial turnout in the Iraq elections this week and Bush's four major speeches on the war as key reasons for the turnaround.

"The last two weeks have been critically important and I believe may be seen as a turning point in the war in Iraq and the war on terrorism," Lieberman told reporters after he and a bipartisan group of senators met with Bush and top administration officials on the war.

"I believe the president has begun a new conversation with the American people, looking back and talking again about why we went into Iraq to overthrow Saddam Hussein, why we remain there, why success in Iraq is so critical to America's national security, and how we intend to win," he said.

Lieberman has become a Bush administration favorite while partisan sniping over the war has grown more intense.

I just really don't understand Lieberman. There is no political advantage in supporting Bush anymore.

for years. Bush did what he wanted. Lieberman supported regime change because he believed the lies Chalabi told him that a Saddam-free Iraq would become an Israeli-friendly Muslim nation. Lieberman will best be remembered as a FOOL.

that we are now just going in circles. I have more faith in my republican boss than I do Joe Lieberman. We need to turn around and pull the knife out of our collective back. That man is worse than a republican, he borders on neocon. I don't ever want to hear another word about supporting him because he's a dem. When are we going to start treating him, and those like him, like we treated Zell Miller? Lieberman is a Republican in everything but name. He is basically campaigning for Republicans every time he opens his mouth.

My hunch is that in 2008 he wants to be the Vice President on the Republican Ticket. They'll spin it as trying to "unify" America. Giuliani/Lieberman 2008! (The ironic thing, being of course, is the fact that Giuliani is more liberal than Lieberman.)

56. Lieberman continues to support this illegal and immoral war because....
...he knows that our continued presence in the Middle East satisfies certain objectives of the policies of Israel with whom he is very closely aligned. Lieberman is also closely alligned with the NeoCons in the Pentagon who also support Israel's policies.

In short, Lieberman's interests are chained to the interests of the NeoCons...as they go, so shall Lieberman.

68. Pro-war, pro-censorship, pro-Bush: what a fucking ass!
And only five years ago, he might have become veep. Scary thought!

Lieberman is the poster boy for principles. As in: this is what happens to the party when it abandons them and panders to the worst in Americans.

72. I wonder if Joe deliberately sabatoged
the Gore/Lieberman ticket in 2000, and helped to throw the election. It seems to me that he finds Bush a vastly more satisfactory president than he would have found Gore. He was part of the reason why I voted for Nader in that election, and I wonder how many other people were similarly influenced.

I just wish he would switch parties already.

75. I know one thing for sure...he deliberately sabotaged
...Howard Dean in 04, it was the total reason for his presence in the race! I would as soon spit at him as look at him.
I could go on and on, but I won't.

87. He couldn't have done much more deliberately
He sat down and made Cheney- a man with about the most extreme voting record in the House look to be reasonable and gentlemanly in the VP debate.

And looked like the same simpering whiner we see now several times a week.

He's done more damage to the party than most Republicans.

88. I remember watching that debate.
I almost got physically ill. It was more like a love-fest than like a debate between political opponents.

89. Worst political "debate" I ever saw
Quite literally.

Went a long way toward taking Cheney's abominable record (and hence Bush's "compasionate conservative" lies) off of the table.

99. Wonder no more: the fake military ballots had a Gore victory -202 votes
as per NYT (eliminating them, that is). It was Holly Joe, without consulting Al Gore that went on MTP and declared that "all military votes should be counted"

It makes me wonder ...

74. Has anyone actually counted the number of "turning points" we've had?
It might be an interesting exercise. It seems we keep turning corners only to find ourselves in a position that is worse than before. Lieberman has no clue.

76. Holy Joe: "We went into Iraq to overthrow Saddam Hussein"
Holy Joe and Bush/Cheney frightened the American people with tales of WMDs in order to get the public to support the criminal invasion of Iraq. Had Bush said that the sole reason for going to war was regime change, not even the AIPAC puppets in Congress would have voted for war.

Holy Joe is a traitor to this country, to the Democratic Party, and he has become a war criminal and a de facto member of the Bush dictatorship.

77. How about taking a walk in the streets of Baghdad, Joe?
Walk the walk, Joe.

Go to Baghdad and walk down the streets. Turn a few corners there, Joe.

What's that? You have a lot of other stuff to do?

Like kissing a warmonger's ass and supporting a criminal corporate cabal?

You are a coward just like Bu$h, Joe. A disgrace to the People of Connecticut and all Democrats.

if he were in the Knesset. As it is, his job is to do what's right for this country, and particularly for his constituents in CT. If he wants to set Israel's policy, he should make use of his right of return.
