When the Blackhawk helicopter that Illinois Army National Guard Maj. Ladda "Tammy" Duckworth piloted was shot down in Iraq, she was a soldier. During her rehabilitation, Duckworth became a politician.
Duckworth is running as a Democrat for the 6th U.S. Congressional District seat -- a key race in the mid-term battle to wrest control of the Republican-led U.S. House of Representatives.
During a recent interview, the 37-year-old Hoffman Estates resident said she always aspired to serve her community, but a near-fatal rocket attack in November 2004, which caused her to lose her legs, and the months that followed changed her life's direction.
"After the year that I just went through, this won't be bad," she said about her candidacy.
