New Zogby Poll: Americans Support Impeaching Bush for Wiretapping
Zogby Poll: Americans Support Impeaching Bush for Wiretapping

For Immediate Release: January 16, 2006
New Zogby Poll Shows Majority of Americans Support Impeaching Bush for Wiretapping
By a margin of 52% to 43%, Americans want Congress to consider impeaching President Bush if he wiretapped American citizens without a judge's approval, according to a new poll commissioned by AfterDowningStreet.org, a grassroots coalition that supports a Congressional investigation of President Bush's decision to invade Iraq in 2003.
The poll was conducted by Zogby International, the highly-regarded non-partisan polling company. The poll interviewed 1,216 U.S. adults from January 9-12.
The poll found that 52% agreed with the statement:
"If President Bush wiretapped American citizens without the approval of a judge, do you agree or disagree that Congress should consider holding him accountable through impeachment."
43% disagreed, and 6% said they didn't know or declined to answer. The poll has a +/- 2.9% margin of error.
"The American people are not buying Bush's outrageous claim that he has the power to wiretap American citizens without a warrant. Americans believe terrorism can be fought without turning our own government into Big Brother," said AfterDowningStreet.org co-founder Bob Fertik.

2. Let's see if the So-Called Liberal Media reports this.
The media have been supporting Bush long after the majority of the people have ceased to do so.

23. FAUX is saying 63% of Americans don't mind being tapped...
It must have been from their own poll.

24. That poll has been debunked as faulty by Media Matters.
Media conservatives have been quick to cite flawed polling to suggest that the majority of Americans support the Bush administration's use of warrantless spying, as Media Matters for America has previously documented. Notably, MSNBC political analyst Pat Buchanan, Washington Post columnist Charles Krauthammer, CNBC host Lawrence Kudlow, and conservative radio host Michael Reagan all referenced a December 28 Rasmussen poll -- showing that 64 percent of Americans believe "the National Security Agency be allowed to intercept telephone conversations between terrorism suspects in other countries and people living in the United States" -- to illustrate an alleged majority support for Bush's spy program. However, this poll did not specifically ask if the NSA should be allowed to wiretap without court-approved warrants, which is the main source of criticism of Bush's program.

3. Poorly worded poll
"If President Bush wiretapped American citizens without the approval of a judge, do you agree or disagree that Congress should consider holding him accountable through impeachment."

The poll doesn't say that Americans think he actually should be impeached, only that Congress should consider it. And then there is that word "if". The word if should not be used in polls. It just sets up too many hypotheticals.

Zogby needs to go back to the drawing board here.

9. The poll was commissioned to get the answer they got, so the question
was deliberately as soft as they could make it.

Sad to see our side using the same tactics as theirs, but I guess I can understand it. Problem is, it proves nothing, and the media will rightfully refuse to cover it, since it is spin more than news. But it might give the Dems something to spin if they can get any momentum.

13. Well the House has to consider the articles of Impeachment
and then the trial, after the impeachment resolution has passed, goes to the Senate and would be overseen by Chief Justice Roberts...

Impeachment in and of itself does not remove the president from office...

It is a step in the procedure to remove the president from office....

I think the question was worded as benign as possible....
