Utah House passes parental rights (anti-gay) bill
http://www.sovo.com/thelatest/thelatest.cfm?blog_id=5278

A bill drafted in response to a Utah court battle over the parental rights of a lesbian partner has passed the House.

The measure is sponsored by Representative LaVar Christensen. It stems from a pending Utah Supreme Court case on the visitation rights of two estranged women who decided to have a child together.

The bill would stop a court from awarding parental rights against the wishes of the biological or adoptive parent. It would also prohibit courts from issuing visitation, custody rights or child support payments.

Some lawmakers worry the bill would effect grandparents and stepparents.

1. A very sad sign of things to come.
As a gay man, each and every day brings for me another kick in the stomach. And I apologize to everyone here, for my "behavior" seems to be losing elections for the Democratic Party. It's no wonder Dean and Hillary have been distancing themselves from my community.

3. You don't have to apologize for anything
Fuck a bunch of neocon neanderthal morons. If you are an American Citizen you deserve equal protection under the law and all constitutional liberties - period. If someone has a problem with your sex life than this veteran strongly urges them to go fuck themselves. Its such a shame there is profit in hate.

in Utah. I'm so damn glad I ended my six months there last year. If I never went back, it would be too soon...

7. Thanks Boss
It just hurts so much when all my guy and I want to do is raise a family and call it a day.

I'm the one in my group who stands tall and strong when it comes to politics, keeping everyone informed and being all around outraged. But this shit is really starting to beat me down. Maybe I'm just having a down day.

12. Never apologize for who you are!
And never agree with those assholes who blame us for everything. Stand up to them and let them know their bigotry is no different than the bigotry we see from the right.

2. First let me state that I have NOT seen the bill nor am I a lawyer...
but it seems to me that the effect of preventing courts from awarding parental rights against the wishes of biological or adoptive parents seems pretty broad.

Unless it specifically exempts straight couples (ort targets gay couples), it will be brought to bear in every divorce case with children involved and every custody dispute that comes up in Utah. If it DOES contain that exemption, it will likely be struck down by the courts for that very reason.

11. I think it strictly targets gay couples...
Here's why:

provides that this bill does not effect any rights provided under Title 30, Husband
23 and Wife.

4. Typical Conservative Anti-Family Legislation
I suspect that this legislation probably will affect step-parents and grandparents as well. I'm appalled but not surprised. This sorry piece of legislation is part and parcel of the so-called "conservative" movement's stealth campaign against the extended family.

These right-wingers ought to be called on their actions.
