US in tight spot in UN over Iraq
http://sify.com/news/international/fullstory.php?id=13202102

United Nations: The United States, which went to war in Iraq without the United Nations' backing, now finds itself in the awkward position of having to ask for UN help in stabilizing the country.

Nearly four months after launching the war that toppled Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein, Washington is having serious difficulty finding sufficient troops to help the more than 140,000 US soldiers deployed in Iraq.

And the Pentagon's acknowledgement that US forces in Iraq are confronting guerrilla warfare is not simplifying matters.

The United States has also had to confront staggering costs from the war, amounting to some 3.9 billion dollars per month - double the spending projected by the White House prior to the war.

"Initially, they thought Iraq would be a big cake and each party invading it would have a piece," a diplomat said. "Now they realize it's not something to enjoy but something you have to pay for."

4. Iraq
Sadly, I feel we will never be out of this mess. It just keeps getting worse. The entire administration should resign. It will take years to get out of our financial situation. We won't have money to pay the troops. The poor will become poorer with the middle class in the same situation. It seems the people who put this so-called president in office are just turning a blind eye to what is actually occuring. Only when it hits them will they realize what they have done. I am more afraid than I have ever been in my entire life. Never have I seen such meanness, incompetence, arrogance and downright imperialistic attitude. Watergate was nothing compared to this. I remember. Then, though, there were some decent Republicans who understood when the president had to go.

2. Oh, they got George's number at the UN...

""We want absolute transparency concerning the use of funds meant for rebuilding Iraq. That money should not be used to pay Halliburton or Bechtel for contracts awarded without any controls," a diplomat said.

Halliburton and Bechtel, two US conglomerates with close ties to the Bush administration, have benefitted from major contracts for rebuilding Iraq."

Without the discovery of a sufficient quantity of weapons of mass destruction (AND delivery systems) to be a plausible threat to the US, there's no way for the US to try to justify it's actions by pointing to Article 51 (self-defense).

If that is the case, and it is, then according to the treaties the United States itself signed, the US should receive some sort of sanction for starting the war in Iraq. It was an criminal act.

It's unlikely they will allow themselves to be used to 'clean up' after the US, if nothing else. If they are to get involved, BushCo will have to give up the spoils of war.

Something to the effect of being spineless, useless or something like that...

11. Russia certainly deserves credit for seeing how it would

turn out. Vladimir Putin, and Igor Ivanov tried to stop the invasion--
in spite of the Economic and Political fallout that they knew
would be forthcoming from a spitful Bush.

13. The U.N. is Valuable
And W will be seen as an arrogant cowboy oaf for not realizing it sooner. Plus he really stuck it to the U.S. taxpayers. Low and middle income, of course.

12. This has passed the point of insanity.
Our country is going down the toilet. It is time for all reasonable people of whatever political ideology to band together to defeat the evil that has usurped our country's government. These so-called "PNAC" empire builders have nearly wrecked the world.

I really don't care who anyone votes for, as long as these pretenders to the throne are REMOVED FOREVER. Bush should hang his head in shame for the rest of his life for abdicating his responsibilities as President. Cheney, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, Perle, Libby, Rice et al should be in PRISON.

Whatever happened to "I cannot tell a lie"? My aunt fostered my interest in the presidency, democracy, our country, and world history when I was small by telling me how honorable our presidents had been. I long for those innocent days. God help us all.

14. Gee - why do they have to go to the UN?
Edited on Fri Jul-18-03 09:21 PM by colorado_ufo
What the hell happened to the "Coalition of the Willing?" The 40+ (or whatever it was) countries that Condi Rice bragged about, that were in the "Coalition" with the US and Great Britain? Why can't they each contribute about 1,000 troops? And surely each can contribute at LEAST 10 million a month to the war effort - spit in the bucket compared to the billions per month that the US is pouring in.

Oh, yeah - I forgot - that would mean sending half of each country's population to Iraq and garnishing their GNP for the next 175 years.

15. I'll say it yet again - until WMDs are found in more than just a
can of bug spray, Republicans are boiling over the fact that France and Germany still have the edge in believability in this world. Not in the US, but the rest of the world.

(Okay, before somebody reminds me, Russia too!)
