US delays trying Australians
US delays trying Australians
From correspondents in Washington
July 19, 2003
THE United States said today it will hold off military trials of British and Australian suspected terrorists imprisoned at its base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, pending legal discussions about their fates.

Alleged al-Qaeda terrorist David Hicks, 27, of Adelaide, has been detained without charge since being captured fighting for the Taliban in Afghanistan in November 2001.

Sydney man Mamdouh Habib, 46, is also being held in Guantanamo Bay after being arrested in Pakistan on suspicion of training with al-Qaeda.

The White House announced the decision as US President George W Bush began a long weekend at his Texas ranch just a day after discussing the matter here with British Prime Minister Tony Blair.

1. So let me get this straight...
we'll delay the trials of the Brits and Aussies we rounded up and continue to hold contrary to international law, but proceed with the trials for captives of every other nationality? That can't be right, even in the bizarro-world of extra-contitutional US concentration camps. Won't they have to declare a moratorium on tribunals? Would they really try to just have a different set of rules for captives from "white countries?"

3. well, to be fair
the gentlemen captives from the UK and Oz are also people of color. I just can't fathom there being different codes of justice for our concentration camp captives based on apparently no more than nationality. I wonder if the Saudis have complained and tried to have their nationals repatriated to stand trial?

4. Actually, the main Aussie (David Hicks) is white...
but it's puzzling that John Howard has consistently acted like he couldn't give a shit what happened to them. He's repeatedly refused to meet with Hicks' father.
