NYT: 9/11 Memorial Foundation Leader Resigns
9/11 Memorial Foundation Leader Resigns
By DAVID W. DUNLAP
Published: May 26, 2006

Under tremendous and conflicting pressures, with the 9/11 memorial planning process seemingly spinning out of control, Gretchen Dykstra resigned today as president and chief executive of the World Trade Center Memorial Foundation.

"There is general agreement that the multiplicity of authorities and the unclear roles has made it difficult for anyone to move expeditiously," she wrote in a letter to Thomas S. Johnson, the chairman of the foundation's executive committee.

"Perhaps it would help if there was one less player. Therefore, it is with sadness and regret that I hereby tender my resignation, effective immediately."

Joseph C. Daniels, the general counsel of the foundation, was appointed acting president.

Whether the foundation was losing a principled, capable executive who fearlessly drew public attention to the unsustainable price tag of the memorial or a lightning rod who failed to raise enough money and alienated Gov. George E. Pataki and Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg or both depended on whom one asked....

1. How about a wall with their names divided by office and floor?
How hard would that be? How expensive would that be? WTF is the problem?

2. The problem is they're trying to spend half a billion $
on this. Someone somewhere must be getting rich. Think what that money would do for the poor.

3. For heavens sake, people
Put in a lovely green park with a plaque and a museum dedicated to cultural learning and peace in memory of those who died, then call it a day. Yeah, yeah, I know it could never happen on such prime real estate, but it would probably look miles better than anything they end up with, and it would be a much more meaningful statement than some 'monumental' office park.
