Harris chides PB County over 2000 recount
June 05, 2006

WEST PALM BEACH — She may be a member of Congress and a Republican candidate for U.S. Senate, but Katherine Harris remains best known in Palm Beach County for her role as Florida's Secretary of State during the 2000 presidential recount.

Harris defended her 2000 role on Monday and chided Palm Beach County for not completing its manual recount on time during a Forum Club of the Palm Beaches luncheon at the Kravis Center.

<snip>

Toward the end of the Q-and-A, Harris was asked the inevitable question about her role in 2000.

"It's part of history and it's kind of the elephant that's always in the room, particularly in Palm Beach," Harris said. As she has in the past, Harris said her role in Florida's recounts was strictly a ministerial one and "I simply obeyed the law." She also noted that Palm Beach County was the only county not to complete its hand recount by a 5 p.m. deadline on Nov. 26, 2000. The county asked Harris to extend the deadline, but she refused.

The county eventually submitted results several days later, but Harris said "the returns were so confounded they were never ready."

3. The county asked Harris to extend the deadline, but she refused.
She refused to let the county finish counting when allegedly only 500 votes separated Bush and Gore. Clearly she cares nothing for democracy.

I hope she goes broke and has to live in an alley. It would still be to good for her.

14. Did she have the power to do so?

The law in 2000 stated that the 7-day deadline can only be extended "by an act of god." In other words, a hurricane.

I dont know if Harris had the power to extend it.

She may have very well participated in the problems before the election (ie: purging the voter rolls) but one person does not have the power to determine deadlines. Deadlines are determined by the Florida legislature which gets that power from Article II, Section I of the US Constitution.

Constitutionally, the Florida legislature, being the elected body of power in the State of Florida, had total authority over the election. Neither the courts nor the executive have constitutional authority over election law. Only the state's respective legislature has that authority.

The founding fathers felt it was OK to grant that power to the congress. Because they thought that if fraud was a problem, the people would hold their state congressmen responsible.

10. I hope she will explode when she loses, and blame it all on what she
had to do to throw the 2000 election. I hope she decides she doesn't want to live with these filthy secrets the rest of her life.

Here she is with a fellow @$$hole, Pombo the Magnificent.

In closing her hour-long talk that included a question-and-answer session, Harris thanked the crowd for attending.

"No matter if you're for me or against me, I just appreciate that you stayed and you listened," Harris said. Nearly half the crowd had already left.

and media circus that they turned the recount into had nothing to do with why WPB couldn't finishing counting the votes.

Oh and that little staged riot in Miami didn't interfere with the election either.
