U.S. Soldier Killed in Iraq; UN May Be Asked to Help
Sat July 19, 2003 12:51 PM ET
By Andrew Marshall

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Attackers firing guns and rocket-propelled grenades killed a U.S. soldier in Baghdad on Saturday as Washington considered asking the United Nations to help restore order in Iraq and contain a guerrilla insurgency.

1. Why aren't the Iraqi people forming their own security forces?
snip>

U.S. soldiers began recruiting for a new Iraqi army to replace the force that collapsed with barely a fight in the war that deposed Saddam. American troops handed out hundreds of 18- page application forms in central Baghdad.

I wonder if the application is in English.

2. Does anyone else find it odd
That almost exactly one soldier dies per day? The trend has gone on for months. What are the odds?

5. I've had the exact same thought
Almost exactly one per day, everyday. Not sure what it means though...

3. Thank you for posting this, Ripley...
...however, could you put the date and time in the subject line? There are so many of these posts (of American soldiers dying needlessly because of the lies of the Bush Administration), and to time stamp them would make it easier to follow. Thanks!

4. Okay, I'll try to edit subject line.

I wasn't sure if mods would allow that much info in the header, since they usually only allow the official headline.

You're welcome and thanks for the feedback.

On edit: can't change the post now, but I'll include date/time in future.

It is hard to keep track of all the casualties. The wounded barely get mentioned in the media, yet the wounded will be around us for years to come!
