Neo-Nazis attack Croatia Chief Rabbi outside Zagreb synagogue
A group of neo-Nazis assaulted Croatia's Chief Rabbi Eliezer Aloni on a Zagreb street on Saturday.

Aloni was on his way home from synagogue when a bunch of men wearing shirts with swastikas printed on them yelled "Jews out!" in German at him.

Witnesses say the men pushed the rabbi over after he asked them if they knew the meaning of what they were shouting.

Eliezer took refuge in the Jewish community building and informed the local police.

16. you don't know what you're talking about
Serbia, FYI, was the first part of Yugoslavia that was "judenrein" ("cleansed" of Jews). The Serb regime was just as determined to get rid of Jews as nazi occupation/collaborators everywhere in Europe.

Reducing the Yugoslav wars during WWII to "Serbs=good, Croats=bad" is just as stupid as doing the same thing for the recent wars.

FYI, the Ustasa regime was imposed by the Nazis after the most popular Croatian political party, the Croatian Peasants Party, refused to collaborate. The Ustasa were a marginal group that was in exile in Italy.

This is not to say there was not any antisemitism in Croatia, but pretty much the same as in Serbia.

And let's not forget, it was really the multiethnic Partisan forces, which included Croats, Muslims and Serbs, that were the allies of the US and Britain during the war, and that ended up defeating the fascists in Croatia and Serbia.

So it is wrong to say that "Serbia" sided with the US while "Croatia and Bosnia" sided with the Nazis. All of them were occupied by Nazi forces, and in all of them there were partisan forces fighting against the occupation.

2. I hope they are caught and put in jail. See this is why standard human
rights across the board are important. Why you don't undo something like the Geneva Convention because you are a power-monger. Hate laws should be universal. But what is the USA doing today? Getting ready to keep rights away from some of their people re: marriage.

3. I completely agree. Laws prohibiting the fueling/indocrination of hate,..
,...against ANY religioun, race, gender, etc. should be universal. We can speak freely without hatred.

7. And there should be laws about teaching hate too. Some of the freaks
Edited on Tue Jun-06-06 08:34 PM by applegrove
arrested in Canada were arrested for "teaching terrorism". Good law. And not just race of religion. People should not be taught to hate someone because of who they are.. unless they are a predator in which case you teach people how to protect themselves from such monsters. People should not be taught how to scapegoat or persecute.. cause that is the tool of psychopaths. It used to be called Christianity or monotheism..that taught to live and let live but apparently that isn't enough (it never was)in some places in the world.

13. well ... not
Some of the freaks
arrested in Canada were arrested for "teaching terrorism".

The suspects and charges are detailed here:

http://www.cbc.ca/news/background/toronto-bomb-plot/suspects.html

No "teaching terrorism" there.

Anti-terrorism Act, amending the Criminal Code, now Part II.1 (sections 83.01 ff):

http://www.canlii.org/ca/sta/c-46/

Definition of "terrorist activity":

http://www.canlii.org/ca/sta/c-46/sec83.01.html

“terrorist activity” means

(a) an act or omission that is committed in or outside Canada and that, if committed in Canada, is one of the following offences:

<long list of specific offences>, or

(b) an act or omission, in or outside Canada,

(i) that is committed

(A) in whole or in part for a political, religious or ideological purpose, objective or cause, and

(B) in whole or in part with the intention of intimidating the public, or a segment of the public, with regard to its security, including its economic security, or compelling a person, a government or a domestic or an international organization to do or to refrain from doing any act, whether the public or the person, government or organization is inside or outside Canada, and

(ii) that intentionally

(A) causes death or serious bodily harm to a person by the use of violence,

(B) endangers a person’s life,

(C) causes a serious risk to the health or safety of the public or any segment of the public,

(D) causes substantial property damage, whether to public or private property, if causing such damage is likely to result in the conduct or harm referred to in any of clauses (A) to (C), or

(E) causes serious interference with or serious disruption of an essential service, facility or system, whether public or private, other than as a result of advocacy, protest, dissent or stoppage of work that is not intended to result in the conduct or harm referred to in any of clauses (A) to (C),
and includes a conspiracy, attempt or threat to commit any such act or omission, or being an accessory after the fact or counselling in relation to any such act or omission, but, for greater certainty, does not include an act or omission that is committed during an armed conflict and that, at the time and in the place of its commission, is in accordance with customary international law or conventional international law applicable to the conflict, or the activities undertaken by military forces of a state in the exercise of their official duties, to the extent that those activities are governed by other rules of international law.
"Counselling" the commission of a criminal offence is not "teaching terrorism". So no, Virginia, and before there's another outbreak of denunciation of Canada's freedom-of-speech-hating ways, I just wanted to clear that up.

That said, I support the limited laws we do have in Canada prohibiting the incitement of hatred against certain identifiable groups.

15. The news report.. in the very early days.. I heard.. said something along
the lines of "teaching terrorism". Perhaps it was a journalists euphemism. Perhaps the police. Perhaps someone was trying to clarify what the charges meant without using criminal code language.

Don't know.. but it struck me at the time. Cause teaching persecution and hatred or whatever (teaching the one mindishness)is a tool of tricksters & cults everywhere.

I hope there is a law. Teaching is a very important part of how something like al Qaeda works. Really - if there isn't a law.. seeing as how freak #1 moved to Canada, hung out at a mall, and taught youths his views all day long.. I'm sure there will be one.

4. Just wondering
Aloni was on his way home from synagogue when a bunch of men wearing shirts with swastikas printed on them yelled "Jews out!" in German at him.

Did they specify where they wanted Jews to go?

Zagreb's Jewish community said it was the third anti-Semitic incident to have taken place in the country within a week.

<snip>

Last Friday, the Jewish community's offices received a phone call by an anonymous caller who threatened to assist Hamas to blow up the community's buildings.

Is that supposed to persuade the Jewish community in Zagreb to move to Israel? Perhaps it's intended to persuade the Jewish community in Zagreb to convert to Islam?

or not they want something. I'm not asking why, just what. What do they want?

the anti-semites want all the Jews to go? To Israel! Once all the Jews are herded into Israel they would come for us there too. These poeple are nuts.

10. My answer...
"Did they specify where they wanted Jews to go?"

I am guessing they didn't specify. The idea is that Jews should just get out of the country, where they end up is of little interest to bigots.

"Is that supposed to persuade the Jewish community in Zagreb to move to Israel? Perhaps it's intended to persuade the Jewish community in Zagreb to convert to Islam?"

I doubt it is to persuade the Jewish community to move to Israel or convert to Islam, but rather terrorize them. It is also a perfect example of the anti-Semitism associated and, often conflated, when discussing Israel.

I don't know if antisemitic people that tell Jews to get out of their country takes sides in the I/P issues.

14. eh?
Perhaps it's intended to persuade the Jewish community in Zagreb to convert to Islam?

I have seen the individuals who engaged in this act described as Neo-Nazis and skinheads. I have not had the impression they were Muslim. I'm therefore not sure where your question is coming from.

(The caller who made the threat to help Hamas blow up the Jewish community buildings would seem to be anti-Jewish, anti-Israel, pro-Palestine, whatever, and misguided and nasty. Muslim? Who knows? I suspect not.)

ZAGREB (EJP) --- A Croatian student was arrested last week after sending an e-mail to a Jewish Community in Zagreb indicating his support for Hamas.
Whether an actual crime was committed may be an open question, but the authorities sure seem to be on the job.

ZAGREB (EJP) --- Indian-born American conductor Zubin Mehta joined the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra for a concert on Wednesday celebrating the 200th anniversary of the Jewish community of Zagreb.

The concert was also seen as one of the first steps towards improved relations between Croatia and Israel and began a year of celebrations for the 200 year old community.
