28. You may be correct...
the news reports say the ship is listing to port (i.e. to the left).

31. that is when viewed towards the bow (front pointy end) from the stern
(the more blunt end with the rudder and props)...Just kidding!

"Left" and "right" are used for maneuvering, i.e., rudder orders, as in "Left 15 degrees rudder".

Port is the left hand side of the ship when you are facing the bow.

25. More likely a rouge wave
I read an article just a couple of days ago that talked about these giants becoming more common. They can be 80+ feet and they will put a large cruise ship over on it's side very easily.

4. reporting accuracy
I am NOT criticizing Poll_Blind, but if CNN is reporting a 'partial roll to one side', I just have to wonder whether the writer understands ships at ALL.

If a ship rolls, it will roll to one side, then roll back to the other. Duh. If the ship doesn't roll 360 degrees (and only some very specialized boats can do that), then of course the roll is partial.

A ship can list (tilt to one side, at rest) and a steering casualty can cause the ship to heel (lean), at least temporarily. An abrupt rudder input can cause an abrupt heel, which could cause people to fall, since most cruise ships try to avoid having their passengers feel any motion (*).

I'll look for more info, too. Partial roll. Geez.
I only spent three years at sea, so I guess a CNN reporter might know more about it than I.

(*) our family was on a short Bahamas cruise one winter. An announcement was made at dinner that the captain was going to try and alter course to make the ride smoother. I had to carefully study a glass of water on the table to determine that we were indeed rolling a very few degrees.

8. Link from a Tampa paper
Passenger injured when cruise ship rolls at sea
PORT CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — The Coast Guard at Port Canaveral says today that a cruise ship took a heavy roll at sea, injuring some passengers.

The Coast Guard didn't say how many degrees that the ship Crown Princess rolled before it righted itself. The Coast Guard said that the ship experienced what it called “a steering casualty.”

no details, just a rudder problem, causing a slight turn (I think that was the phrase used)

A quick heavy roll can certainly cause injuries, esp. aboard a cruise ship, where the passengers are expecting a hotel with no apparent motion. Objects falling, chairs sliding, people losing their balance, etc.

I'd have to see a very specific set of diagrams, but most ships can take a VERY severe roll (well in excess of 45 degrees) before it will capsize. The USN ship I served on could take a 90 degree roll; there was a class of USN destroyer that could go to 110 degrees.

If you care to learn more, google 'metacentric height'. The Wikipedia entry is decent.

I'm trying to find a good photo of what happens to a large ship in a high speed turn. Found one:

16. just FYI
in that clip, the ship was moving pretty slowly.

What probably happened is that the rudder was turned too far, too fast, for the speed that the ship was travelling. That will cause a heel to the opposite side (hard right rudder, ship will heel to the left in the turn.)

Crown Princess Statement

Updated 5:30 pm EST

After departure from Port Canaveral at approximately 3:40 pm eastern time today, Crown Princess experienced an unexpected list to the port side as she began sailing north towards her final port of New York.

Initial reports are that a number of passengers did sustain serious injuries. There are also numerous reports of injuries such as cuts, bruises and fractures. We are currently assessing the full extent of passenger injuries, and have returned the ship to Port Canaveral to transfer the more seriously affected passengers to a medical facility ashore.

We deeply regret this incident, and are doing everything we can to make our passengers as comfortable as possible under these difficult circumstances.

We are also investigating the cause of the ship's sudden list, which is unknown at this time. We can confirm that the watertight integrity of the ship has not been compromised, and it is safe for passengers to remain onboard while the ship is alongside in Port Canaveral.

The cruise will be terminated in Port Canaveral, and arrangements are being made to return the passengers home. A full refund will be given to passengers, together with a full reimbursement of any additional expenses.

We will provide details about the next cruise after we are able to fully evaluate the situation.

Crown Princess is currently on a 9-day Western Caribbean sailing, roundtrip out of New York, with calls at Grand Turk, Ocho Rios and Grand Cayman. Port Canaveral was the last port of call before returning to New York.

27. Several passengers have been posting about the experience
on www.cruisecritic.com. Apparently, there's lots of broken glass from falling objects in the bars and gift shops. Water sloshed out of the pools and poured down the stairs and televisions fell in the staterooms. The dining rooms were turned into emergency care facilities with passenger doctors assisting the ship's medical staff.

32. During Sea Trials Aircraft Carriers are put through turns
going all ahead full and then again at all back full to make sure they are ballasted properly and can handle any emergency turn situation. I presume cruise ships are designed for the roughest seas and some sharp angles. It just feels scary leaning over, but it is not going to flop on it's side if ballasted properly.

37. Liquid Ballast Free Surface Effect
Ballast is a very powerful thing. As the heel angle increases the response curve representing righting pressure becomes steeper and steeper.

Also, heavy ships tend to resist external pressures. Wave energy us usually resisted by large ships until after it has passed.

----------

Perhaps the free surface effect had something to do with this.

Effect of free liquids
When a tank or compartment in a ship is partially filled with a liquid that is free to move as the ship heels, the surface of the liquid tends to remain level. The surface of the free liquid is referred to as free surface. The tendency of the liquid to remain level as the ship heels is referred to as free surface effect. A free surface in a ship causes a reduction in GM, due to a change in the centre of gravity, and a consequent reduction in stability. The free surface effect is separate from and independent of any effect that may result merely from the addition of the weight of the liquid.
